Bringing much pride to the city, Boronganon Jamieboy “Jam” Fabula has been collecting medals in Jiu Jitsu since 2017. Raised by educators Mr. and Mrs. Ramon Fabula, the Barangay Taboc local has risen to the top of Jiu Jitsu in the Philippines.
After getting his bachelor’s degree in nursing, Jamieboy moved to Cebu City to work. Living alone made him realize he had no one to protect him, but himself.
"You need to equip yourself with self defense, you need to know how to defend yourself."
He started his Jiu Jitsu career back in 2016 at the Strive CCA / Jiu Jitsu Methods in Cebu City. After a few months, he fought his first competition and was defeated.
“In Jiu Jitsu, it's either you win or learn,” Fabula pointed out.
The defeat turned into a motivation to win the next competition he will be fighting in. On the 23rd of June 2017, he won a silver and a gold medal in the 2017 Asian Sport Jiu-Jitsu Federation (ASJJF) Dumau International Open Championship.
By 2018, he had collected 4 golds in the ASJJF Philippine International Jiu Jitsu Open and Asian Pacific International. He also earned 3 medals including a gold medal in the blue belt featherweight division at the Philippine Friendship Novice Jiu Jitsu Championship in October 2019.
At this year’s Asian Jiujitsu Federation-Manila Open Championship held on Aug. 20 and 21 at the Festival Mall in Alabang, Muntinlupa, he won a gold medal.
“I know Borongangan makakaproduce pa hin damo nga athletes, in order for that to happen let us help those athletes. As a full blooded Boronganon, I'm planning to share my knowledge and talent sa mga batang boronganon, to also advocate anti-bullying and women empowerment., Fabula expressed.
With the belief that Borongan can produce national athletes, he envisions teaching Jiu Jitsu to aspiring locals of any age in Borongan in the near future.
“Aside from being a perfect martial art for self defense and fitness, learning Jiu Jitsu will help kids boost their self confidence. Also, kids have been living a sedentary lifestyle playing video games and watching TV. Jiu Jitsu is a perfect physical activity that is fun and interesting for them,” he added.
