British Author and Inspirational Speaker Simon Sinek gave one of the most remarkable anecdotes that I have ever heard. He said:
“Remember this as you gain fame, as you gain fortune, as you gain position and seniority. People will treat you better they will hold doors open for you; they will get you a cup of tea and coffee without even asking. They will call you Sir and Ma’am, and they will give you stuff. None of that stuff was meant for you, that’s stuff is meant for the position you hold. It is meant for the level you have achieved of leader or success or whatever you wanna call it. But you will always deserve a Styrofoam cup.”
This story has made me appreciate more and more my very own boss - Sec. Art Tugade.
I can attest to the fact that Sec Art does not have a security phalanx that surrounds him, nor a vehicle convoy whenever he goes around. He shuns these amenities and privileges even if he is entitled to these perks, especially if we talk about his security as a high ranking government official.
He doesn’t like to sit at the head of a table. He goes to the office using NOT a government-issued vehicle, but his personal car, and his own driver— whom he gets issued a traffic citation ticket whenever seen violating a traffic rule.
It is because Sec Art is grounded on his recognition of power as fleeting and temporary, and his embrace of humility as an important trait and value that a government official should carry.
Sec Art can readily and easily commune with ordinary people, or with commuters, passengers, travelers, and even the frontliners and essential workers like maintenance and security personnel. He can be comfortable riding a Grab car, or the MRT-3, and he also falls in line at the Airport Check In and Immigration Counter whenever he travels.
He can do all of these because he is public service personified. Because he has made it a point to immerse himself in public transportation, if only to get the true sentiment of a stakeholder.
And because at the end of the day, Sec Art Tugade knows that eventually, he will become a private citizen, and will become an ordinary Filipino who looks forward to a more comfortable and convenient life. Thanks to a government who truly cares.
