LIBERTY ZABALA is a Filipina American 4-time Emmy Award-winning Journalist currently serving as a Reporter and Weather Anchor at FOX 5 in San Diego, California.
She was recently awarded the Vada and Colonel Barney Oldfield National Security Reporting Fellowship by the Radio Television Digital News Foundation (RTDNF)her work covering Marines, Sailors, active duty service members, and veterans in San Diego which is the nation’s largest military town. RTDNA was created to help members embody and uphold the standards of ethical journalism and promote leadership in the newsroom.
Liberty was born on July 3rd, 1986 in Eagle Rock, Los Angeles, California. She is 35 years old as of 2021. She is the daughter of former LA Herald-Examiner reporter and foreign diplomat, Laurencio V. Zabala, Jr. Her father blessed her with the name “Liberty” because she was born on the day before July 4th which is Independence Day.
Education:
Liberty is an alumnus of California State University, Northridge where she graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism and collateral in Political Science with an emphasis in International Relations. She is currently enrolled at the American Military University pursuing her Master of Arts in Homeland Security with a concentration in Counterterrorism.
She previously worked as a Reporter, Weather Anchor, and fill-in News Anchor for NBC 7 in San Diego. In November 2016, Liberty was honored as one of the 100 Comcast NBC Universal employees selected from across the country to take part in (Morning Joe) Mika Brzezinski’s “Know Your Value” program in association with MSNBC.
Prior to that, she was 1 of 4 reporter trainees selected from across the country for the NBC Reporter Development Program. Under the program, she went through intensive multimedia training workshops alongside NBC Universal’s top media executives, talent, and coaches at NBC 5 Dallas, NBC 10 Philadelphia and NBC 4 New York under the direction of The Poynter Institute’s Al Tompkins.
She also writes, shoots., edits and reports enterprise stories for 3 live newscasts a day on NBC 7. Before that, she worked as a Multimedia Journalist for KCOY/KKFX, the CBS/FOX affiliate covering California’s Central Coast.
Following in her father’s footsteps., her dad, Laurencio V. Zabala, Jr. wrote a book entitled, “Filipinos: The Probationary Americans.” He was a Filipino diplomat and journalist to address the gaps in Americans’ knowledge about Filipino American history and experience and “the essential but unwritten role Filipinos have played in the making of America."
