RONQUILLO CONANAN TOLENTINO, 77
The Publishers Association of the Philippines, Inc. (PAPI) and the Federation of the Provincial Press Clubs, Inc. (FPPCI) mourn the passing of lawyer Ronquillo Cunanan Tolentino, 77 years old, a staunched advocate of press freedom and the vital role of community journalism. He died of lingering illness yesterday, in Kalibo, Aklan.
A prolific writer, book author, newspaper columnist, and practicing lawyer, Tolentino has served PAPI and FPPCI as director, representing the Visayan regions. He was also president of the Aklan Press Club, Inc. (APCI) for many years.
In government service, he was elected member of the Sangguniang Bayan of Kalibo, member of the provincial board and vice governor of Aklan province.
Acclaimed as an outstanding servant-leader, Tolentino was cited particularly for serving relentlessly the causes of the disadvantage sectors of society.
Popularly known as “Kel:, he was a youth leader during his student days. Tolentino received various awards as chairman of the Philippine Red Cross, Aklan chapter.
Juan P. Dayang, PAPI chairman emeritus and former Mayor of Kalibo, said: “Kel was a great loss. His records as a public official, humanitarian service leader, and as journalist was unblemished. He will always be remembered as an upright and outstanding citizen”.
PAPI president Nelson S. Santos and FPPCI Allan S. Sison, are set to arrive in Kalibo to pay tribute to their fallen comrade.
The bereaved family of Tolentino is expected to announce the date of internment and schedules of necrological service.
