Icons of Women Empowerment

Makati Mayor Jejomar Erwin S. Binay hailed as ‘icons of women empowerment’ three principals of public elementary schools in the city named among the country’s Five Outstanding Public School Principals by Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) and Sa Aklat Sisikat Foundation, Inc. (SAS).

School principals Zenaida S. Peñafuerte of Rizal Elementary School, Marilyn C. Macalma of Cembo Elementary School, and Dr. Elita T. Lopez of Comembo Elementary School were feted recently for having “effectively transformed their elementary schools through the HSBC Principals Leadership Enhancement and Development (LEAD) Program.”

“The city government and the people of Makati salute our three outstanding public school principals for bringing pride and honor to our city. Clearly, they are icons of women empowerment, which is vital to inclusive social progress, as they have shown in their exemplary leadership and selfless commitment to providing quality education to the youth,” Binay said.

The mayor also thanked the three awardees “for being shining beacons illuminating the path to educational excellence for the present generation of young learners, and for laying a solid institutional foundation for the benefit of future generations.”

In a report to Binay, DepEd-Makati officer in charge Priscila de Sagun said that Peñafuerte, Macalma and Lopez, the first recipients of the award, were chosen from among 199 school principals from various regions in the country after excelling in key performance indicators of the HSBC LEAD Program. She said the selection process for the award was based on measurable indicators of success, both quantitative and qualitative.

De Sagun said the three school principals were unaware that they were already being monitored and evaluated during the series of LEAD conferences they attended. Monitoring teams of HSBC and SAS also visited their respective schools and conducted interviews with faculty and students without their knowledge.

Peñafuerte has served as principal of Rizal Elementary School, the largest elementary school in Makati, since 2008. Recognized as a top teacher trainer, she has been asked by DepEd to train several teachers from other schools. She has also been the recipient of numerous awards, which include the Kiwani’s Club’s ‘Ulirang Guro’ award, and various certificates and plaques of recognition for her teacher training services in schools all over the NCR. During her term as its school principal, Makati Elementary School bagged the award for Makati’s Most Effective School in Science and Mathematics.

Cembo Elementary School Principal Macalma, on the other hand, has received a number of awards from universities and private colleges on the development and training of pre-service teachers. She received a Certificate of Excellence for the International Robot Olympics and various awards as school administrator. She also developed and managed programs like Project TEACH (Think Enjoy and Accept Challenge), a comprehensive reading project for Grades 1 and 3 students.

Normally, principals are stationed in a school for a maximum of five years. But because of her exceptional performance, Dr. Lopez has been serving as principal of Comembo Elementary School since 2002. Her achievements include being named by the DepEd as recipient of the Exemplary School Head Award for the National Capital Region and as Most Outstanding Female Principal of Makati.

In 2007, the HSBC in partnership with SAS developed the HSBC Principals LEAD Program that seeks to encourage principals to create a vision and mission for their schools, help them write their School Improvement Plans (SIP) and develop their leadership skills so they can more effectively establish innovative learning communities.

HSBC president and CEO Tony Cripps and SAS president Margarita Delgado handed the awards to the five recipients in a ceremony held at Shangri-La Makati last week, which served as the culmination of the three-year educator training program.
