Ange Kouame is a naturalized Filipino basketball player who plays for Gilas Pilipinas, the national team of the Philippines. He was born in Abidjan, Ivory Coast on July 25, 1998. He moved to the Philippines in 2016 and enrolled at Ateneo de Manila University, where he played for the Blue Eagles in the UAAP. He won the UAAP MVP award in 2019 and helped Ateneo win four consecutive championships from 2017 to 2020³.
Kouame became a Filipino citizen in May 2021 and joined Gilas Pilipinas for the FIBA Asia Cup qualifiers and the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament. He suffered a knee injury in June 2022 that sidelined him for several months⁴. He recovered in time for the Asian Games in October 2023, where he played a vital role in Gilas' historic gold medal finish. He averaged 7.4 points, 6.1 rebounds, 1.6 steals, and 1.1 blocks in seven games. He had a stellar performance in the final game against Jordan, where he scored 14 points, grabbed 11 rebounds, and blocked two shots¹.
Kouame is now set to play for UB Chartres Metropole, a French club that competes in the third tier of French basketball called Nationale Masculine 1². He announced his move on social media on October 8, 2023². He hopes to improve his skills and experience in Europe and eventually play in the EuroLeague, which is his dream². He also plans to continue representing Gilas Pilipinas in future tournaments, such as the FIBA World Cup in 2023.
Kouame is known for his length, athleticism, defense, and energy. He idolizes NBA All-Star Joel Embiid, who is also from Africa³.
