Pinoy Battered Husbands
« on: April 18, 2012, 09:15:02 PM »

By Ayan Mellejor
Inquirer Mindanao

DAVAO CITY—Battered husbands do exist but most of the time they just keep quiet for fear of being sued themselves under a law protecting women and children against abuses.
This was what the Federation of Gender and Development (FGAD) here has found out, said Rene Estorpe, its president.

Estorpe cited the cases of two husbands in Agdao Centro, where he is the barangay (village) chairman, as examples of how men—who tried to complain about abuses by their wives—ended up being charged themselves.

He said the two complaining husbands found themselves charged with violating the Anti-Violence Against Women and their Children (VAWC) law, or Republic Act No. 9262.
“The wives accused them of engaging in illicit affairs,” Estorpe said.

What is a battered husband?

A battered husband is a victim of domestic violence who happens to be male (obviously).

A battered husband suffers the same emotional, verbal and physical abuse as a battered wife, but is less likely to report these crimes to authorities. (http://www.wisegeek.com/)

The relationship between a battered husband and his abusive spouse can be very complex. A battered husband often employs the same defensive tactics as a battered wife, including denial, withdrawal and disconnection. The shame of owning up to a spouse's abusive behavior could cause a battered husband to defend her around others. Some excuses may be that his own actions triggered her violent response, or she's only reacting to post-natal stress. Denial can be a powerful coping mechanism for a battered husband, especially if he dreads the idea of having meaningful discussions with his abusive spouse.

There's a popular presumption that men should somehow be able to “control” the woman in their lives, and if they can’t, then they deserve what they get. But the fact is that today a man who tries to defend himself is more likely than not to end up in jail. (http://cliffviewpilot.com/)

for both men and women, husbands and wives...

Recognizing the warning signs of domestic violence and abuse

It's impossible to know with certainty what goes on behind closed doors, but there are some telltale signs and symptoms of emotional abuse and domestic violence. If you witness any warning signs of abuse in a friend, family member, or co-worker, take them very seriously. (http://www.helpguide.org/)

General warning signs of domestic abuse

People who are being abused may:

#Seem afraid or anxious to please their partner.
#Go along with everything their partner says and does.
#Check in often with their partner to report where they are and what they’re
      doing.
#Receive frequent, harassing phone calls from their partner.
#Talk about their partner’s temper, jealousy, or possessiveness.

Warning signs of physical violence

People who are being physically abused may:

#Have frequent injuries, with the excuse of “accidents.”
#Frequently miss work, school, or social occasions, without explanation.
#Dress in clothing designed to hide bruises or scars (e.g. wearing long sleeves in
       the summer or sunglasses indoors).

A battered husband is a victim of domestic violence who happens to be male (obviously).

A husband who allows herself to be battered is a chicken, so he is no different from battered chicken...

Anyway, what's buttered chicken? ::)

John 3:16-18 ESV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.

Sa akong tan-aw aning asawaha, morag gisisi nang daan ang iyang kasingkasing...
