In the dynamics of marriage, men sometimes call their wife unflattering remarks such as "ugly" or "fat" to prick her soft spot and gain the upper hand in the occasional war of egoes. According to Dr. John Gray in
Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus, the woman's deepest need is emotional security and being loved. Men use such language, sometimes without being fully conscious, to bring down her defenses.
The equivalent of "ugly" to a man is to call him "inutil", "walay pulos", "being of no help", "good-for-nothing" or "impotent" because man's deepest need is to feel needed, to be looked up to as being capable and in control of things.
Truth to tell is that women are just as wont to sputter "inutil" as men are to say "pangit" (or indirectly, by saying "maganda ang kapitbahay natin"). To even things out, these lawmakers have to legislate scrapping foul language on both sides.
