wow! one of the real heroes we have the privilege of knowing in our lifetime.
years ago, my connecting flight from amsterdam to the philippines didn't wait for the delayed flight from frankfurt to amsterdam, where i was on. desperate (i didn't know where to go; it meant staying overnight in amsterdam), i fretted and complained at the klm girl at the airport.
"please try to enjoy amsterdam, ma'am", she said. "interesting people come here. nelson mandela just arrived today."
whew! she was right. just the thought that nelson mandela was in the same place where i was was already something. i calmed down.
of course, i didn't get to meet nelson mandela.
