Versailles (France) (AFP) - Photos of a dog buried alive up to its head in France sparked an outpouring of anger on social media Wednesday, and police said the owner was taken into custody.

The French mastiff was discovered and then rescued on Saturday by a man walking his own dog on waste ground in Carrieres-sur-Seine, west of Paris.

The man posted pictures on Facebook saying: "Only her head was visible and it was difficult to see given the amount of earth covering her."

A police source told AFP that the dog was surrounded by stones and her lead was attached to a sack of gravel to prevent her breaking free from the earth.

The man called the emergency services and began to free the animal. The dog, "shocked and dehydrated" according to the police source, was taken to a veterinary clinic nearby.

Police quickly traced the animal to its 21-year-old owner who was taken into custody. He denied burying the dog, saying that the animal had run away.

However, investigators said this was "not very plausible".

"The dog is more than 10 years old and suffers from arthritis. It's difficult to imagine her running away," said a source close to the investigation.

The owner will be put on trial for animal cruelty and could be sent to prison for two years and be forced to pay a fine of up to 30,000 euros ($32,600).

An online petition calling for the "maximum sentence for the owner" had received 135,000 signatures by Wednesday.

The fury on social media spiked a new high when learning that a 10-year-old arthritic-laced dog was buried alive with his face barely visible to the passerby who saved him. A man walking his own dog on a waste ground in France saw this dog and jumped into action.

The dog was "shocked" and dehydrated" as the man started to dig the animal out of the dirt. He had called the emergency services for help, but started to rescue the dog on his own before they got there. The authorities arrived and the dog was taken for treatment to a vet.

According to AFP on Yahoo News on August 5, the dog was covered in dirt, trapped in this vacant lot in Carrieres-sur-Seine, which is west of Paris, France. Once the rescue was done and the dog was in the hands of veterinarian clinic staff, the man, who had taken pictures of the dog, posted them on social network. This sparked fury across social network in France and now the story has gone global.

Along with posting the pictures, the man told the dog's story of how it was buried alive writing, "Only her head was visible and it was difficult to see given the amount of earth covering her." The person who did this to the dog took some time to complete this evil and horrendous task because the dog was surrounded by stones and its collar was attached to a sack of gravel so the dog couldn't break away or somehow work its way out of the ground.

The International Business Times reports that the dog was a rare breed and the authorities said it was "hungry" and "scared." Police got on this immediately and traced the dog to its owner. The 21-year-old man said that the dog ran away from him and that he didn't do this to the dog.

Police weren't buying this, saying the owner's explanation was "not very plausible." According to the police investigators, the dog is suffering from arthritis and it is more than 10 years old. "It is difficult to imagine her running away," said a source close to the investigation.

The dog's owner was arrested and he will be facing a trial for animal cruelty. This crime carries some big penalties if the man is found guilty. He is facing up to $32,000 in fines and up to two years in prison.

Back to the folks on social media... if they had anything to say about this guy's punishment he would get the maximum sentence allowed by law. An online petition has gathered 135,000 signatures by Wednesday since it was first posted. They want the book thrown at this man if he is found guilty. It looks like the dog is a survivor! A post on a community Facebook page says it all:

""people were openly crying at the state of the poor lad." The post said: "He didn't get like that overnight, so someone left him to suffer appallingly before discarding him like an old shoe. Even though he was obviously in a lot of pain and hungry he was still very trusting to the people who were helping him."
