Press Release:: [Biñan City solon to refile Magna Carta of Student Athletes]

"Congratulations to the UST men's basketball squad and the entire USTe community for our success at reaching the finals of UAAP Season 82. It was a storied season of top-notch basketball punctuated by the genius of coach Aldin Ayo and our Tigers," said Binan City Rep. Marlyn 'Len' Alonte, UST alumna with a BS in Tourism degree.
Alonte said, "UST Tigers are made of championship stuff. We will learn from this season and return in Season 83 with much more grit and growl."

"I also take this occasion to echo the principle Coach Aldin Ayo stressed as regards attempted poaching of star players and other student-athletes,” said Alonte who watched the finals game in her home in Biñan City on television.

"College athletes are students first, not professionals for trading, barter or auction. When schools care for varsity players, their most important investment in them is the brand of education their institutions represent and that education is priceless," Alonte said.

She said, "for these reasons, I will refile the Magna Carta of Student-Athletes from the 17th Congress authored by my friend and colleague in the 17th Congress and now Senator Pia Cayetano."

"I will also co-author HB 2440 (An Act Creating The Philippine Sports Academy As An Attached Agency Of The Philippine Sports Commission, Providing Its Structure, Powers And Functions Thereof, And For Other Purposes),” Alonte said.

Alonte said, "these two bills will institutionalize protections and welfare processes for all student-athletes all over the country." (END)
