𝗧𝗪𝗢 𝗙𝗘𝗔𝗥𝗟𝗘𝗦𝗦 𝗠𝗢𝗢𝗧 𝗖𝗢𝗨𝗥𝗧 𝗧𝗘𝗔𝗠𝗦 composed of law students from the University of Bohol (UB) College of Law defied the torrential rains and winds of Tropical Storm Kristine in the Queen City of the South, emerging victorious as semifinalist and quarterfinalist in the 4th University of Cebu-Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (UC-KAS) International Environmental Moot Court Competition held on 21-23 October 2024 at the University of Cebu, Banilad Campus, Cebu City (for its Preliminary Rounds) and at the Bai Hotel, Cebu City (for its advanced rounds).

Declared as one of the competition’s outstanding 𝗦𝗘𝗠𝗜𝗙𝗜𝗡𝗔𝗟𝗜𝗦𝗧𝗦 is Team 430, composed of oralists Hezekiah Kit Sales Canlas (MLS-2) and Ma. Lourdes Ranis (MLS-2), and researchers Adrianna Kyla Sevilla (MLS-2), Vera Marie Bucod (MLS-2), and Diane Guioguio (MLS-1).

Team 424 ranked as 𝗤𝗨𝗔𝗥𝗧𝗘𝗥𝗙𝗜𝗡𝗔𝗟𝗜𝗦𝗧, thanks to great performances from its oralists Lorenzo Torero (MLS-2) and John Marc Paparon (MLS-2), supported by researchers Veronica Belle Datoy (MLS-2), Axelle Manhilot (MLS-2), and Jee Ann Hinaloc (MLS-1).

Oralists Canlas and Torero were once again hailed as 𝗕𝗘𝗦𝗧 𝗢𝗥𝗔𝗟𝗜𝗦𝗧𝗦 𝗜𝗡 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗣𝗥𝗘𝗟𝗜𝗠𝗜𝗡𝗔𝗥𝗬 𝗥𝗢𝗨𝗡𝗗𝗦, ranking 6𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 7𝘁𝗵 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲, respectively, among 30 oralists coming from different law schools across the country – from Bohol, Cebu, Leyte, Misamis, Bukidnon, Zamboanga del Norte, Palawan, and Manila.

Supporting both teams throughout the competition is the unrelenting UB College of Law Dean Greg Austral, faculty member and adroit mooter Atty. Jansyl Tumanda, former UB Law student governor Aubrey Lacuna, JD, and Emma Irene Mende, an environment expert currently pursuing her JD degree in the University.

The oralists and the teams were judged by a mix of expert Filipino lawyers and international environmental lawyers and advocates from Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, India, Germany, and South Korea.

Mooting, also known as moot court, is a simulation of a court hearing or arbitration proceeding involving law students who are required to analyze a given problem, conduct legal research, write pleadings and/or submissions, and present oral arguments to a judge or a panel.

The UC-KAS International Environmental Law Moot Court Competition is an annual event organized by the University of Cebu (UC) in cooperation with Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS) Law Programme Asia, supported by OCEANA and the Philippine Earth Justice Center. This year’s theme focused on the questions relating to the Protection of Forests, Rights of Environment Defenders, and State Responsibility.

John 3:16-18 ESV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
