The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) is now helping 49 Ilonggos pursue degrees in science, mathematics and engineering fields through its scholarship programs.
Data from the DOST regional office here showed that for this school year some 49 Ilonggos are already enrolled as first year college students in their school of choice in Western Visayas under the Republic Act 7687 or the Science and Technology Scholarship Act of 1994.
Of the 49
scholars, three are from Aklan, four each from Antique and Capiz; 18 from Iloilo; 19 from Negros Occidental and one from Guimaras.
Three additional scholars; one from Romblon and two from Siquijor are also enrolled in a state university in Iloilo.
Under the law, they are enjoying tuition and other school fees subsidy not to exceed P6,000/semester; allowance for prescribed textbooks and other essential school supplies at P5,000/academic year; outright grant for Physical Education uniform of P500; free transportation of one economy-class round trip far for those staying outside of home province and monthly living allowance.
They are also entitled to a group health and accident insurance; additional privileges during summer and post-graduation clothing allowance.
Meantime, the DOST also announced that they are now accepting applications for those who are interested to take the scholarship examinations intended for the next school year. - PNA
