Grand Old Man of Cebu
« on: May 16, 2022, 04:09:36 PM »
I AM A CEBUA-know: DID YOU KNOW that the "Grand Old Man of Cebu"—DON SERGIO SUICO OSMEÑA , SR.—is the FIRST Department of Education (then Department of Public Instruction) Secretary?

He was appointed by President Manuel L. Quezon on November 15, 1935 and served until April 18, 1939. Secretary Jorge Bocobo succeeded him, and led the department from April 19, 1939 up to January 22, 1941.

Don Sergio came back with the office renamed as the “Public Instruction, Health, and Public Welfare” from December 24, 1941 until August 1, 1944 when he became the nation's 4TH PRESIDENT. This made him the FIRST DepEd Secretary to serve the office TWICE!

General Carlos P. Romulo was appointed as secretary of the department renamed as the “Public Instruction and Information” from October 1944 to February 1945. (courtesy on dates: my friend, the late Atty. Clarence Paul Oaminal)

Topping 2nd in the 1903 Bar Exams, he is also the ONLY DepEd Secretary who became a PHILIPPINE PRESIDENT. The next DepEd Secretary is still from Cebu—Davao City Mayor and presumptive Vice President-elect, Inday Sara Duterte-Carpio.

Will we have another DepEd Secretary-turned-president? If yes, then still proudly from Cebu!

John 3:16-18 ESV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
