curious that i am, here's digging deeper...

1.  The Hundred Years' War (1337-1453)

The Hundred Years' War was a series of conflicts waged from 1337 to 1453 between the Kingdom of England and the Kingdom of France and their various allies for control of the French throne. It was the result of a dynastic disagreement dating back to William the Conqueror who became King of England in 1066, while remaining Duke of Normandy. As dukes of Normandy and other lands on the continent, the English kings owed homage to the King of France. In 1337 Edward III of England refused to pay homage to Philip VI of France, leading the French king to claim confiscation of Edward's lands in Aquitaine.

Edward responded by declaring that he, not Philip, was the rightful king of France - a claim dating to 1328 when Charles IV of France had died without a male heir. A claim for the succession had been made for Edward through the right of his mother Isabella, daughter of Philip IV. Instead, the son of Philip IV’s younger brother, Charles of Valois, had been crowned king. The question of legal succession to the French crown was central to the war over generations of English and French claimants. (wikipedia)

the war was not really fought continuously for a hundred or 116 years.  rather, it was a series of wars, a succession of conflicts, that covered that period.  thus:

The war is commonly divided into three or four phases, separated by truces: the Edwardian Era War (1337–1360), the Caroline War (1369–1389) and the Lancastrian War (1415–1453), which saw the slow decline of Plantagenet fortunes after Joan of Arc (1412–1431) appeared. Contemporary European conflicts directly related to this conflict were the Breton War of Succession, the Castilian Civil War, the War of the Two Peters, and the 1383-1385 Crisis. The term "Hundred Years' War" was a term invented later by historians to encompass the events. (wikipedia)

2.  Panama hats

A Panama hat (sometimes informally among hat enthusiasts, just a Panama) is a traditional brimmed hat of Ecuadorian origin that is made from the plaited leaves of the toquilla straw plant (Carludovica palmata).

Straw hats woven in Ecuador, like many other 19th and early 20th century South American goods, were shipped first to the Isthmus of Panama before sailing for their destinations in Asia, the rest of the Americas and Europe. For some products, the name reflects their point of international sale rather than their place of domestic origin; hence "Panama hats". (wikipedia)

3. Catgut

Catgut is a type of cord that is prepared from the natural fibre found in the walls of animal intestines. Usually sheep or goat intestines are used, but it is occasionally made from the intestines of cattle, hogs, horses, mules, or donkeys.
***
The word catgut may have been an abbreviation of the word "cattlegut". Alternatively, it may have derived by folk etymology from kitgut or kitstring — the word kit, meaning fiddle, having at some point been confused with the word kit for a young cat. (wikipedia)

catgut is used as strings for musical instruments, more commonly before synthetics came in.

Catgut isn’t just used for instruments, but is also often used in very high quality tennis rackets; bow-strings; for hanging weights on high-end clocks; and sometimes used for stitching wounds, though that practice has gradually given way to using cotton and synthetic threads, which seem to make wounds less prone to infection. 4. Russia celebrates the October Revolution in November

At the time of the revolution, the Russian Empire still was using the ancient Julian calendar, which had been discarded some 150 years earlier by most Western countries. The result was that each day in Russia was dated 13 days earlier than the same day in the West.

According to the old calendar, the date of the Bolshevik revolution was October 25. But according to the new Gregorian calendar, the date actually was November 7.

Only after the Bolsheviks established the Soviet Union did the country adopt the new calendar. So it was the Bolsheviks themselves who were responsible for changing the date of their October Revolution of October 25 to the national celebration November 7. (http://wiki.answers.com/)

Much-publicized photo purporting to show the storming of the Winter Palace, October 1917. It is in fact from a Bolshevik re-enactment staged as a civic spectacle on the third anniversary of the action. The actual fighting at the Palace took place at night and there were no cameras present. (http://www.nevsky88.com/)

5. Camel hair brush

A "camel" brush is not made of camel hair. It is a generic term for soft-haired brushes that are made of various inexpensive hairs such as pony, bear, sheep, and lesser grades of squirrel mixed together and supposedly named after the man who originated it. Camel hair brushes received their name from "Mr. Camel"*, who invented them. (http://www.brushes-manufacturers.com/)

and they're used for application of cosmetics and as artists' painting tools

i don't know if anyone had tried brushing a pet camel's hair with this brush.

*some sites say it's a german guy named "kemmel".

6. The Canary Islands in the Pacific

Contrary to its name, the islands have little to nothing to do with the canary bird. Rather, it is the bird that is named after the islands, not the converse. The name Islas Canarias is likely derived from the Latin name Canariae Insulae, meaning "Island of the Dogs", a name applied originally only to Gran Canaria. According to the historian Pliny the Elder, the Mauritanian king Juba II named the island Canaria because it contained "vast multitudes of dogs of very large size". (wikipedia)

The Canary Islands (Spanish: Islas Canarias), also known as the Canaries (Spanish: Canarias), is a Spanish archipelago located just off the northwest coast of mainland Africa, 100 km west of the border between Morocco and the Western Sahara. The Canaries is one of Spain's 17 autonomous communities and an outermost region of the European Union. The islands include (from largest to smallest): Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, La Palma, La Gomera, El Hierro, La Graciosa, Alegranza, Isla de Lobos, Montaña Clara, Roque del Este and Roque del Oeste. 7. King George VI

George VI or Albert Frederick Arthur George (14 December 1895 – 6 February 1952) was King of the United Kingdom and the Dominions of the British Commonwealth from 11 December 1936 until his death. He was the last Emperor of India, and the first Head of the Commonwealth.

***

George's elder brother ascended the throne as Edward VIII on the death of their father in 1936. However, later that year Edward revealed his desire to marry the divorced American socialite Wallis Simpson. British Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin advised Edward that for political and religious reasons he could not marry Simpson and remain king. Edward abdicated in order to marry, and George ascended the throne as the third monarch of the House of Windsor.

During George's reign the break-up of the British Empire and its transition into the Commonwealth of Nations accelerated. (wikipedia)

8. The purple finch

[Purple finch] adults have a short forked brown tail and brown wings and are about 15 cm (4 in) in length and weigh 34 g (1.2 oz).

male purple finch
Adult males are raspberry red on the head, breast, back and rump; their back is streaked.

female purple finch
Adult females have light brown upperparts and white underparts with dark brown streaks throughout; they have a white line on the face above the eye.

-data and images from wikipedia

So why is it called a purple finch?

The color purple (historically) is a mixture where red was more prominent than blue. Royal purple is referred to as crimson, which is the color that appears on the Purple Finch. Most people see the purple finch as being a raspberry color. (http://answers.yahoo.com/)

9. Chinese gooseberries in New Zealand

chinese gooseberry sounds unfamiliar.  but say 'kiwi', and most of us know what it is.

and yes, it's commonly understood that it comes from new zealand.  and yet...

The fuzzy kiwifruit is native to southern China, and has been declared a National Fruit of China. Other species of Actinidia are native to India, Japan, and southeastern Siberia. Cultivation of the fuzzy kiwifruit spread from China in the early 20th century, when seeds were introduced to New Zealand by Mary Isabel Fraser, the principal of Wanganui Girls' College, who had been visiting mission schools in Yichang, China. The seeds were planted in 1906 by a Wanganui nurseryman, Alexander Allison, with the vines first fruiting in 1910. (wikipedia)

A kiwi orchard in New Zealand

why it's now 'kiwi" and not 'chinese gooseberry':

As the local popularity of this fruit increased, New Zealanders discarded the old Chinese name for the fruit (mí hóu táo) in favor of the name Chinese Gooseberry. When the export market to the United States started to grow the fruit it was marketed under the invented name melonette as US-China relations were not positive.  The San Francisco importer at Ziel & Co suggested that this name was unsuitable, as both melons and berries attracted high duties. It was proposed that the fruit be named after the kiwi, New Zealand’s national symbol, as the bird and the fruit share a similar appearance (small, brown and furry). "Kiwifruit" was used as a global brand for marketing the fuzzy kiwifruit, but was not registered internationally as a trademark. Kiwifruit has since become a common name for all commercially grown fruit from the family Actinidia.(wikipedia)

10. The color of the black box in a commercial airplane

An example of a flight data recorder; the underwater locator beacon is the small cylinder on the far right. (English translation of warning message: FLIGHT RECORDER DO NOT OPEN)

A flight data recorder (FDR) (also ADR, for accident data recorder) is an electronic device employed to record any instructions sent to any electronic systems on an aircraft. It is a device used to record specific aircraft performance parameters. Another kind of flight recorder is the cockpit voice recorder (CVR), which records conversation in the cockpit, radio communications between the cockpit crew and others (including conversation with air traffic control personnel), as well as ambient sounds. In this both functions have been combined into a single unit. The current applicable FAA TSO is C124b titled Flight Data Recorder Systems.

Flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder

Popularly referred to as a "black box" by the media, the data recorded by the FDR is used for accident investigation, as well as for analyzing air safety issues, material degradation and engine performance. Due to their importance in investigating accidents, these ICAO-regulated devices are carefully engineered and stoutly constructed to withstand the force of a high speed impact and the heat of an intense fire.

After the crash of Gol Transportes Aéreos Flight 1907, Brazilian Air Force personnel recover the flight data recorder of PR-GTD, the Boeing 737-8EH used for the flight, in the Amazon Rainforest in Mato Grosso, Brazil.

Contrary to the "black box" reference, the exterior of the FDR is coated with heat-resistant bright orange paint for high visibility in wreckage
, and the unit is usually mounted in the aircraft's empennage (tail section), where it is more likely to survive a severe crash. Following an accident, the recovery of the FDR is usually a high priority for the investigating body, as analysis of the recorded parameters can often detect and identify causes or contributing factors. (wikipedia)

so why is it called 'black box' to begin with?

Early flight data recorders were literally boxes painted black, hence the term "Black Boxes". It wasn't until 1965 they were required to be painted bright orange or bright yellow to make them easier to find at a crash scene. The term "Black" also often implies death and the last moments of fatal flights are often revealed throught the FDR. Perhaps this is a reason the moniker stuck even after the devices were painted.
