BNHS CLASS OF 1987 MANIFESTO: RESTORATION OF THE NAME 'BOHOL NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL'
Message: Province of Bohol
City of Tagbilaran
BOHOL NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL - CLASS OF
1987

MANIFESTO

We, the graduates of BOHOL NATIONAL
HIGH SCHOOL – CLASS OF 1987, do hereby
pledge our all-out support for the
RESTORATION OF THE NAME “BOHOL NATIONAL
HIGH SCHOOL” for the following reasons:

Whereas, the “BOHOL NATIONAL HIGH
SCHOOL,” as an educational institution,
has helped mold the future of the
countless Boholanos who have passed the
portals of the school;

Whereas, sometime in 1997, a group
worked on the change of name of the
school from “BOHOL NATIONAL HIGH
SCHOOL” to “DR. CECILIO PUTONG NATIONAL
HIGH SCHOOL,” after Dr. Cecilio Putong,
the Boholano who became Secretary of
Education during the time of Pres.
Carlos Polestico Garcia;

Whereas, such action as done without
proper consultation / public hearing
with the school authorities, teachers,
students, alumni and those who have
loved the school for its name and the
ideals for which it stands;

Whereas, there has been a general
clamor for the restoration of the
name “BOHOL NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL” from
alumni to preserve and uphold the
identity of the school highlighting the
name of the province of “BOHOL;”

Whereas, the old building of the “BOHOL
NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL” originally “BOHOL
HIGH SCHOOL,” constructed in 1905 has
been declared as “heritage landmark” by
the National Historical Institute (NHI);

Whereas, the school could have honored
Dr. Putong’s remarkable achievements by
way of naming a particular building or
something of significance inside the
campus;

Whereas, Dr. Cecilio Putong, while his
achievements have given pride to the
Boholanos, his singular honor cannot
overshadow the magnitude of the
collectively glory reaped by countless
alumni of “BOHOL NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL;”

THEREFORE, we the graduates of “BOHOL
NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL – CLASS OF 1987,”
do hereby support the move to restore
the name “BOHOL NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL”
and hereby affix our signatures during
our 20th Anniversary Reunion this 27th
day of July, 2007 in the City of
Tagbilaran, Bohol, Philippines.

I was a Bohol High student in 1992. :)

Bohol High's name should be restored. Walay impact ang Dr. Cecilio Putong.

Agreed. Wa nalang unta to usba ang 'Bohol High'! Sa BSAT ko ga hi-school, pero as a Tagbilaranon / Bol-anon, I still think we should stick with Bohol High.

Sakay mog tricycle, dili gyud intawon moingon ang pasahero sa driver ug 'Putong, Nong'. Diba ang iingon sa pasahero, 'Bohol High'? Kung pangutan-on nimo ang usa ka estudyante ug asa siya skwela, he or she will always say 'Bohol High' and dili 'Putong'. Point is, Bohol High will still continue to exist despite the change in name, and Putong will not, except in official papers / documents. Putong is just not an appealing name to start with - sorry kung naay Putong gabasa ani, no offense meant. But above all that, we must restore the heritage - the name which stood for so many years and through so many generations.

And we then even had a very staunch supporter which was Mam Calimbayan who even had to face the wrath from the higher ups. (She was temporarily suspended for supporting our manifesto). However I don't know kon unsay nahitabo adto. If I remember it right, miabot nato sa national capital pero nahanaw daw aso. I think we will again be discussing this with the batchmates para ma-revive as we prepare for our Silver Jubilee...

we have been fighting for this for more than 10 years already but found a little to no hope!

renaming the school that once was Bohol National High School to its original name is the job of our congressmen? if in the last 10 years some of them have been approached to sponsor a bill renaming the school back to its original name and nothing has happened ever since. it means only one thing: our congresssmen are sleeping on the job. giuna siguro ug implement ang ilang development projects funded by CDF kay naa may SOP nga between 10 and 30 percent, ug ang sponsorship ug balaod nga way SOP wa buhata. sooo typical, sooo friggin' despicable!

Wikipedia: The Bohol National High School was renamed Dr. Cecilio Putong High School by virtue of a law sponsored by then Congressman Isidro Zarraga, Jr. amid a controversy where many Boholanos were not aware of the accomplishments of Dr. Putong, the poor Boholano who, though orphaned at an early age, succeeded in obtaining a good education with the help of his American mentors who recognized his intellectual ability and strong determination to rise above his humble beginnings. Dr. Putong held such position in 1952-53, during President Elpidio Quirino's term.

Of course, Bohol High is Bohol High . . . pride of the province.

Putong High ? . . . Putong Hall na lang . .

renaming the schools in memory of a hero or great man or a philantropist doesn't degrade the school. ang lalis diri, nganong ang mga congressman sa bohol puro ra man ing ani nga klase nga balaud-on ang ilang kasagaran ipasaka? wala na jud silay laing mahunahunaan nga butang? nga ang pag usab usab nalang sa ngalan sa skwelahan ilang madiskitahan?

 Hianut nga sooner or later, dunay makabalik sa ngalan nga Bohol Nat'l High School...
