In a growing number of Chicago area classrooms, children are learning to read and write in much the same way they learned to talk - by trial and error, coached by an adult, motivated by their own interests.
They tackle reading and writing directly, rather than first learning the parts - letter sounds, prefixes, punctuation and so on. They read and write stories; they don't fill out worksheets.
The goal is to combat aliteracy, which experts say is as big a problem in the United States as is illiteracy.
