The week-long “Bigada Eskwela†of the Department of Education (DepEd) will start on May 23 with billions of pesos needed for the construction of more than 800 classrooms in Davao City for the next school year as the department starts implementing of the K+12 education program.
Assistant school division superintendent of DepEd Davao Antonia Diaz said the yearly activity for school maintenance is in preparation for the opening of classes next month. The DepEd will assign all supervisors to different schools to monitor the activities, adding that no fees are to be collected for the activity.
Diaz said though they will be accepting offers in kind, like paints, broomsticks and other materials needed for the clean-up. The education office will also accept help from other stakeholders, like the military who has been consistently helping them in the annual activity.
Meanwhile, Allen Sacamos, planning officer II of DepEd Davao, said only P88 million has so far been allotted this school year. However, it is not enough to fund the construction of needed classrooms in this city.
Sacamos said another P20 million is allotted for the repair of classrooms in all public schools in the city.
He said for school year 2010-2011, there are 399 classrooms needed for the elementary, while 473 classrooms are needed for high school. The DepEd-Davao Region has already identified which schools need more classrooms.
Education Secretary Armin Luistro aims to fast track the construction of additional classrooms and it could be a two-storey four-classroom building or a one-storey two-classroom building, he added. (PNA)
