Melon-head whale found dead in Dimiao, Bohol
« on: October 05, 2011, 07:34:29 AM »
A male juvenile melon-head whale was found dead after being washed ashore in this eastern town.

The team of Dr. Alessandro Ponzo of Physalus attempted to rescue and revive it but they failed.

A certain Rosalito Balighot Sr., a resident here, reported to Bohol Rescue Unit for Marine Mammal (BRUMM) at around 8:30 AM of September 25 that a whale was found on the shores of barangay Luyo in this town

According to Balighot, a resident of the barangay named Jovencio Pilbera Sr. was first to find it.

After examining it, Ponzo concluded that the whale must have been dead for a week already since it is already decomposing.

"The skin were already peeled off with evident signs of entanglement from net or fishing line and a bruise and blade cut below the lower right jaw," according to Ponzo.

They later buried it in an area at the back of Dimiao Police Station so they could later recover its skeleton next year for educational purposes.(RVO)

If the whale was dead and decomposing, was it practical for them to try to revive it? Considering it was already dead for a week, the smell of decomposition should have been tell-tale sign to dismiss resuscitation efforts....as futile...
