Danao, Bohol did it again!

Danao again
By Romy Teruel
Sunday Post

Danao did it again!  No not the Danao, Cebu.  It’s the Danao, Bohol. The former is known for its gun-making industry while the latter is that municipality in central Bohol that was almost forgotten for sleeping too long.  Only the police and military could not forget Danao, Bohol because it was the site of many bloody encounters with the local insurgents before. But today Danao, Bohol is a beehive of adventure tourism. Further in the past, Danao is of course remembered for  the exploits of Boholano hero Francisco Dagohoy who led the Boholanos in the longest rebellion against Mighty Spain.

Danao has aroused pride again among Boholanos for carving not only a name in local tourism but also made the map of Bohol shine more brightly in the tourism map of the world. After only a little more than two years of establishing a market in eco/educational/extreme adventure tourism with its caving or spelunking and rubber tubing and less than a year for its zip line, it again launched two more heart- pounding adventure activities in its sky ride and plunge projects.

No less than Tourism Secretary Joseph ‘Ace’ Durano came to preside over the launching of the two projects last Thursday. Sky ride is actually a cable car experience while the plunge is a canyon swing experience where one is secured in a harness and dropped 30 meters down before being swung like a pendulum at almost 180 degrees swing. Only the healthiest and the bravest of heart are allowed to experience the plunge.

I was in Danao Friday with Facility Director Milalin Javellana of the Phlippines-Australia Human Resource Development Facility (PAHRDF) and her staff to show off what Danao has become and, of course, to thicken the file of endorsers for my favorite tourism adventures.  Mayor Tom Gonzaga and Loinda Saluan, the indefatigable tourism officer of Danao, can be sure that the drove of tourists wanting to experience e.a.t. Danao will include Australians in the near future.

I wanted to do the plunge to test whether the stent Dr. John Viola planted in my heart when he performed the angioplasty would hold but Loinda had strict instructions to her staff manning the plunge not to put me in harness unless they wanted to be out of work that very minute.

So I just contented myself with the sky ride that took about 15 minutes to complete. It’s a very safe trip inside a car hitched to a cable that span the whole Wahig River gorge in Brgy. Magtangtang. It did not really look like a car (more like a contraption) but because the pulleys look like wheels running on the cable that can hold 54 tons of weight, that’s probably why it’s called a car.  The car could accommodate six passengers.

The car is a good venue for proposing marriage because the intended bride will be forced to say yes. That is, if she does not want to get thrown out of the car into the Wahig River 200 meters below.   So for those who do not want to get married yet but are suspecting that their boyfriends have intentions to propose marriage, be sure you get more company when he asks you to take the sky ride with him.

Better still, Mayor Tom should field a car that is enclosed in unbreakable glass.

For the less daring, the zip line or suislide is still the best experience.  This will be so especially when the 1.5 kilometers new zip lines gets completed this year.  The foundations for the cable are already being constructed for all lovers of human flying like me.

What probably separates the Danao adventure tourism  from the others in the country is that in Danao no one businessman can monopolize business.  Mayor Tom said any body who wants to do business at e.a.t. Danao must involve a people’s organization in Danao’s community.  That is the essence of eco-tourism.  The local community must be benefited for it to succeed.

It is not a long way yet for Danao, Bohol but the way things are going and businesses are conducted, the way of progress is getting longer everyday.

NOTES: On Wednesday, July 15th, the provincial government of Bohol will launch its Citizen Charter.  Chairman Ricardo L. Saludo o f the Civil Service Commission will be the guest of honor and speaker at the ceremony.  The Citizen Charter is a document that contains all the frontline services of a government agency where the step by step procedures are shown for the transacting public to know.  Here the length of time for every step is reflected, the fees, if there is any, and the personnel who will provide the service in every step is known.  This way fixers and corruption are eliminated.  All the officials of the provincial government will sign their names on the performance pledge that will be printed on a tarpaulin to be unrolled on the stage during the ceremony.

John 3:16-18 ESV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.

The new attractions at EAT Danao showcase Bohol not only as a model in diversifying its tourism products, but also in mobilizing communities for income-generating activities that give them stake in local economic progress.

Pretty soon, Bohol will not only be Chocolate Hills, Panglao, Loboc River--but also Danao. By the time the international airport is finished, hopefully we'll have a more diverse menu for the tourists to choose from.

Civil works at Catagbacan port in Loon have also been started. It will be the country's first international cruise ship port.

Danao's success in extreme adventure tourism can also be attributed to its strong Danao connection. I mean, Danao Mayor Gonzaga is a very close friend (college buddy) of Tourism Secretary Ace Durano of Danao City in Cebu. In fairness, however, Mayor Gonzaga is a very active leader who has a clear vision for his town. He knows his town's advantage very well and maximizes it for his constituents.

Unfair pud ni nga satement para kay tom and the people of Danao who worked their ass off for this project........In no way did the influence of Sec. Durano played a Major role in the success of EATDanao......it was all diskarte sa mayor......getting the funding, putting the right people sa project, etc......and the hard work and sacrifice sa mga tao didto sa Danao, Bohol.........Danao got the support sa DOT kay nindot ang ilang product.......

Even in talking to the DOT or any Gov't agency, Tom was adamant in going thru the proper channel.....no short cuts......he always wanted to get Gov't Agency support on the merits of the project........not because of palakasan system......

nothing beats good vision, good excecution, good product, good people and hard work......

mag himo nama gani ka ug sweeping generalization saktoha pud na oi......batch mate sila grade school ug early part sa high school.........and dili pud sila barkada at that time.......

"di kaha naka tabang og tourism promotion o sa funding si Sec Durano?"

None at all.........from 2006 to until as of Launching wala......pero during sa launching DOT gave 600K......

sa pag conceptualize, sa pag planning, brain storming, execution, ug gasto all were LGU initiative....DOT was not involve in those activities....

When we did a fund raising activity.........we had to present the concept to Director Roa for her to send a Team from DOT Region 7 to assess the place......good thing DOT 7 saw our potential and sent the team.....pero LGU covered their transporation and food ni ani ha......Honestly speaking.......Director Roa would not have sent a team, if she thought the product we had was trash......

Tourism promotion was initiated by the LGU at their own cost with some help sa province........every chance they have they take media to Danao....every opportunity for media exposure were taken maskin unsa ka gamay..............Joined trade shows with the assistance of the province.....etc....

Before Sec. Durano's first visit .....we were already covered by media.....we were making headway na sa tourism sa bohol....check link below

http://www.sunstar.com.ph/blogs/pinoyoutlook/?p=91

http://www.ironwulf.net/2007/10/03/danao-bohols-new-adventure-mecca/

http://www.cebusmile.com/2007/10/01/action-holidays

100% pinoy covered Danao......

above exposure drew the attention of DOT Manila to us w/c made them consider to look at Danao as a possible venue for the turnover ceremony of Grants initiated by the DOT.....they wanted a place na new sa Tourism.........

They were skeptical at frist kay layo ug bati ang dalan when they did the Occular......but when they got to the place and saw the view sa viewing deck, tried/saw the number of activities there, and that naa na  facitlity to hold the ceremony.......they immediately decided na Danao was the place.....

By the time Sec. Durano went to Danao (may 1, 2008)......Danao was already pulling in Tourist......and had already a number of activiites in place....(Caving, River Trek, Kayaking, Tubing, Rappelling,....).......In fact on the day sa visit there was a group that nga caving and manage to meet up with the Secretary....check the link below

http://eatdanao.multiply.com/photos/album/60/DOT_Secretary_Ace_Durano......Turismo_ang_alas_laban_sa_kahirapan#107

His visit there was a good exposure for us.....pero the visit would not have happend,  if the LGU

1. did  not take the 15M risk to develop that park,
2. did not put the proper infrastructure......
2. did not properly conceptualize the Product,
3. Did not properly plan for it.
4. did not put the right people in the project,
5. did not execute it properly.....
6. Did not prepare the community....
7. etc.....

At best the biggest help the DOT gave us was believing in the product we had.....and gave us input on what to do and sent media people in our intial fund raising activities.........pero they sent a team because of the merits not because malakas si Tom sa kay Sec. Ace......

End of the day It was the the leadership of the mayor, his vision, Sacrifice sa LGU, hard work sa community that largely made EATDanao what it is right now.......of course with some supporting role of DOT and the Province......

"interesting remark...so cebuano diay ang kagikan ni mayor Tom? taga danao cebu na sya.  8)"

and your point is????

Dad ni Tom is from Magtangtang, Danao, Bohol.....and ang Mom ni Tom is from Calape-Tubigon.......100% bolanon....nag dako lang sa cebu kay diri sa cebu ang trabaho sa amahan.....

i really appreciate your lenghty and much detailed reply. surely, you must be part of Tom's inner circle and i highly applaud you all for a very successful endeavor for the greater glory of Danao.

just like many of our previous comments, i think Koddi's comments were meant to support and appreciate Tom and Danao's success and not to malign or take away any credit from your team's effort.

i've read some postings here before that mentioned Tom Gonzaga and i was hoping that his family was originally from Cebu. thanks for confirming that. i'm also Gonzaga and my grandpa was originally from Cebu but most of his siblings and my father's relatives have migrated to Mindanao (mostly Davao area) so I lost connection to our roots. i met and heard many Gonzagas but not anyone from Cebu, many from Cavite and Manila areas, Leyte, Zambo, etc.

so my point is a personal family thing  and i do hope to someday visit Danao and most likely meet my distant relative
;D

Dili baya buot nakong ipasabot nga DOT jud ang major player. In fact, my last statement asserts Mayor Tom's attributes as a leader with a vision for Danao. We cannot help but relate the two because it is what media is feeding the public. I think a feature on Mayor Tom in Bohol or national media will help.

According to Congressman Chatto, who worked for the release of the initial funding,  cruise ship ports will be docking in Catagbacan for at least three times a year. The rest of the year it will host routes that are not served by Bohol ports.  Tagbilaran is considered a regular port, while the cruise ship port will have immigration service and other facilities like money changer, etc.

i'm not an engineer but the primary goal is to make the port's physical infrastructure to conform to international standards. this could mean to have a deeper and wider ports. cruise ships are huge and some are considered to be a 'small city' by itself...with water rides, swimming pool, golf, tennis and other sports.

cguro ang pinaka dako nimo nga makita nga barko dha sa Tagbi x 10 ang size, mao na ang modunggo dha. dapat mas lawm pa jud ang port with enough barrier to hold-off any small bumps by these huge ships. Signage should also be posted in English for tourists and safety precaution should be a priority.  8)

A cruise ship port made a call at the Tagbilaran port recently. Wa gyud makadunggo. So, gi ferry na lang sila og smaller boats. I am sure the Philippine Ports Authority, which will implement this project, has models to pattern from.

maoba? oki.....kay the way i read this statement....."Danao's success in extreme adventure tourism can also be attributed to its strong Danao connection. I mean, Danao Mayor Gonzaga is a very close friend (college buddy) of Tourism Secretary Ace Durano of Danao City in Cebu.. In fairness, however, Mayor Gonzaga is a very active leader who has a clear vision for his town. He knows his town's advantage very well and maximizes it for his constituents."

it would imply a different tune.....murag ga una ang pagkalakas then secondary na ang leadership, vision ug hard work sa mga tao sa Danao sa ila na abot na karo.....

The first sentence is an opinion influenced by pure chismis. Sorry, friends. In my later research, I learned that Danao hatched the idea long time ago pa and risked getting loans for the project which have all been paid. Congratulations to the concerned Danao employees.
