Education of Corella from the Past to the Present
   by fdaray

Elementary education was so difficult to acquire in the early 1940's to 60's. Corella Central Elementary School was the only school with complete elementary education. After finishing primary grade mostly pupils in the barrio schools quited schooling. Only few continued to enroll intermediate grades because of poverty and distance to  the central school. If some graduated Gr. 6, only very few pursued high school in Tagbilaran public schools. Through the effort and initiative  of Mr. Ramon Gasque,   he opened  the   second    intermediate  classes in Canangcaan Elementary School in 1960. It was a funny fact that the first batch of graduates were  mostly older than their teacher, Miss Marcela Lumactud. After two years, Canangcaan intermediate classes was closed due to insufficient enrollment.  So, I decided to continue at Corella Central Elementary School for Grade 6. With all the pains and sufferings rain or shine, I had to hike 4 kilometers morning and afternoon just to complete my elementary education.  To mention some of my classmates: Isabelo Daquipil former vice mayor , Reynaldo Irig former mayor, Miss Lydia Bete, public school teacher ,Elesio Sayon , Concisa Limsan from Canangcaan who as my only companion and Cancio Revita. Canangcaan Elem. School was reopened because many pupils
from nearby barangays of Balilihan and Sikatuna enrolled. From that time on, many were able to enroll high school at Bohol School of Arts and Trade and Bohol Provincial High School. Latter on, in 1980 Corella National High School was opened.
So, nowadays  education is  accessible to all .

Corella, Bohol
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search

Corella Municipal Hall
Catholic Church, Corella, BoholCorella is a 6th class municipality in the province of Bohol, Philippines. According to the 2000 census, it has a population of 6,048 people in 1,263 households. It is located 10 kilometers north of the provincial capital, Tagbilaran City.

Corella is known primarily as the home of the endemic Philippine Tarsier, the world's smallest primates. The 7.4 hectare Philippine Tarsier sanctuary run by the Philippine Tarsier Foundation, as well as the Research and Development Center is in Barangay Cancatac (Canapnapan?) of Corella, about three kilometers from the town proper.

The people of Corella are predominantly conservative Roman Catholics who belong to the Parish of Our Lady of the Village (Latin: Nuestra Señora del Villar) whose feast is celebrated on April 27, only four days before the Feast of St. Joseph, the patron saint of Tagbilaran City celebrated on May 1.

Corella does not have any major industry. It boasts of abundant water supply underneath its patrimony, benefitting mostly the residents of Tagbilaran City with the infrastructure design catering more for the city. As such, it is the town that has become indebted to the government-owned but privately run water distributor for its water consumption.

[edit] Barangays
Corella is politically subdivided into 8 barangays.

Canangca-an
Canapnapan
Cancatac

I can very well empathize with your story because I am from Sikatuna.
I know two of your contemporaries: Billy Daquipil and Dodong Irig.
Sikatuna was ahead of Corella in opening a high school.  The Sikatuna Barangay High School (now: Sikatuna National High School) was a martial law baby in 1972.  I know many graduates there from Cancatac, Canangcaan, and even Pandol.

I did not know that there was already high school in Sikatuna in the early 70's. What I know is that many graduates of Grade V1  in Corella continued  high school in BSAT and Bohol provincial high school, the only schools affordable for them. I left Corella Bohol in 1969 and permanently residing in Digos City.

I did not know that there was already high school in Sikatuna in the early 70's.

Yes, the first batch of graduates of Sikatuna Barangay High School had their Commencement Exercises in March 1975. That was the 1st Commencement Exercise.

What I know is that many graduates of Grade V1  in Corella continued  high school in BSAT and Bohol provincial high school, the only schools affordable for them.

Yes, that's true because it was easier to go to Tagbilaran than to Sikatuna at that time.  The Thames of Corella will not go to Sikatuna. So you have to walk if you want to go to Sikatuna.  I know of only one student from Poblacion Corella who studied in Sikatuna, he is, Winston Opa-on, apo ni Celing (Bolando).  All other students are from Canap-napan, Cancatac, and as far as Tanday.  Also, one from Pandol, Bernarda Calzado who is now a teacher.  I'm sure dihay taga inyo from Canangkaan but I forgot their names.

I left Corella Bohol in 1969 and permanently residing in Digos City.

I was Grade I in 1969.
