An ordinary but industrious Bohol mountain household who has shared Rep. Edgar Chatto’s Bahay Kubo FAITH advocacy for food self-sufficiency in home level is now a model farm family in the country.

The Ordinario family in the upland barangay of Quinapon-an in Antequera is now in fact one of the five national finalists---and soon hopefully the worthiest---in the search for the Outstanding Farm Family of the Philippines.

Family head Catalino “Jun” Ordinario and wife Irene thanked the Great Provider and while encouraging more Boholano households to value backyard agriculture to sustain their own daily food needs and earn from extra produce for their children’s education amidst crisis.  The Ordinarios have five children.

While admitting that one just has to be industrious and diligent, Ordinario acknowledged the motivating drive of Chatto to spread the virus of Bahay Kubo FAITH as inspired by the message of the farm folk song Bahay Kubo itself.

Bahay Kubo FAITH is the congressman’s advocacy for backyard vegetable, root crop, fruit and animal raising, even freshwater fish culture, to ensure food self-sufficiency in household level.  FAITH aptly stands for Food Always In The Home.

Department of Agriculture (DA) Regional Executive Director Ricardo Oblena awarded the Ordinario family as Regional Outstanding Farm Family at Hotel Fortuna in Cebu City just last week.

There were two other regional awardees from Bohol, namely, Cyril Lobregas of Maribojoc as Regional Outstanding Municipal Agricultural Fisheries Council (MAFC) Chairman and Johnny Samson of the Office of the Provincial Veterinarian as Regional Outstanding Artificial Insemination Technician.

The Ordinarios were cited “for their significant contribution to the agriculture sector and to the rural folk and for serving as model farm family” in Central Visayas.

National selection evaluators, accompanied by Provincial Agriculturist Liza Quirog, on Thursday visited the Ordinario household farm which the family calls a Bahay Kubo FAITH model itself.
Certain Ordinario home farm innovations were introduced by Chatto to his hometown of Balilihan and which have proved to be of worth.  Pureza, the congressman’s wife, had herself once visited the uphill Ordinario farm some eight kilometers from the Antequera plains.

The Ordinario family and Lobregas yesterday had separate courtesy calls on Chatto to whom they presented their respective awards.

The hardworking Ordinarios have successfully applied the Diversified Intensive Farming System (DIFS) and contour farming technology to its modest-size but precious farm lot.

They cultivated the area for vegetables, root crops, fruits, rice, animal raising, and even freshwater fish, shell and aquarium fish culture and high-value butterfly culture.

They use organic fertilizer produced from raising worms, a technology called vermiculture.  Cancer patients would occasionally go to their Bahay Kubo to learn their environment-friendly farming or buy totally chemical-free farm products.

Ordinario’s wife is the only Boholano grand slam winner in the country’s search for outstanding barangay nutrition scholar.  She bagged the grand awards in all the municipal, provincial, regional and national levels of the competition in a year. (Ven rebo Arigo)
