Medical White Coat Ceremony: December 15, 2009
« on: December 15, 2009, 06:22:03 AM »
Dear Tubag Bohol,

As you know, when I am not posting on the side here in Tubag Bohol Web Forum, I am engrossed in 2nd year medicine.
With great distinction and honor I would like to share with all of you that my medical batch and I will receive our Medical White Coats on December 15, 2009. (Tomorrow).

The event will take place in District Plaza @ 5PM. The SJSMl College of Medicine Class of 2012 celebrates our completion of 2nd year medicine. The White Coat Ceremony signifies our transition from medical school proper to medical internship.

I know that most of you are abroad; in the Philippines, in Europe, Australia, Canada  and the Middle East, however, I would like to invite all of you in spirit to be there with me when I receive my white coat.

In all things, I would like to give thanks to God for this Victory.

With Final Examinations over, and our marks posted, I am very happy.
Truly: All Glory, Honor and Praise be to God.

Please keep us in your prayers and thoughts.

I would like to make a simple dedication.

I dedicate this simple victory that has been bestowed upon me to my family.
First, I would like to remember the sacrifices of my grandfather, Mr. Rustico Aray Lucino Sr, who was a businessman and who came from the island of Pintuyan, Southern Leyte. He left Pintuyan on banka when he was only 8 years old and only with a 4th grade education. Yet was able to work, through the grace of God and his own intuition and business skills~ sending all 7 of his children to College; and all of them finishing nursing school, engineering and medical school. Let this be a testament that the economic depravity of one's humble beginnings is not a limitation for success~  but the inspiratory engine to drive success!

I would also like to contribute and dedicate this victory in the memory of my grandmother, Mrs. Maria Luz Lucino, who was an educator in life. She was a teacher, a mother, a grandmother, and a loving wife. That her memory continues to live on in the minds and hearts and blood of her children, her grandchildren and her great-grandchildren.
I love you, Mama Luz.

I would also like to dedicate this to my grandmother, Mrs. Fortunata Tan Salvo and my grandfather, Mr. Casiano Salise Salvo Sr. Both of whom come from Valencia, Bohol. That their sacrifices to send their children to college~ all of whom graduated and are successful professionals in engineering and nursing. That their sacrifices are not forgotten, but are driving motivations for their grandchildren and great grandchildren.

I would also give this victory to my parents;

To my father, Engr. Albrando Rico Lucino Sr, and to my mother, Mrs. Liza Salvo Lucino.
For encouraging me throughout high school to aim for the best, and nothing but the best. For encouraging me and providing for me in college that the realization of one's dream is possible--so long as one puts his mind into it and begs and prays for Divine Providence' mercy and guidance~~that what one puts his or her mind to..shall be made so.

My parents ushered a beautiful biblical verse to me when i was in the hardest year of my undergraduate career~, a verse from Matthew 17:20,
“Because of your little faith. For truly, I say to you, if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you.”

I would also like to give thanks to my Uncle Stephen Hinkley and my aunt, Mrs. Maria Lebeth Lucino-Hinkley for always being there for me. I could not be here without your continued support and words of encouragement.

To my baby siblings, my cousins and my relatives and friends, thank you. Thank you for believing in me and praying for me. Thanks be to God for these blessings.

All GLORY, HONOR, and PRAISE belongs to the LORD GOD.

In Jesus' Name.
AMEN.

Curious lang ko:

Can we address you guys as Dr's. like the labels on the pictures above even if you are yet students?

When i only knew about a Dr ( sa encarta) who are:

-somebody medically qualified: somebody qualified and licensed to give people medical treatment
-somebody who is good at doing something, especially fixing or improving something
-somebody with the highest university degree: a title given to somebody who has been awarded a doctorate, the highest level of degree awarded by a university
-Roman Catholic theologian: in the earlier history of the Roman Catholic Church, an eminent and influential theologian
-a teacher, or somebody very knowledgeable

I know you all are good students but im not so sure if it is yet the right time to call you Docs when you are yet in your second year? Im just curious dont take it personally. Kay sa ako sad mabaw-an man gud nga you dont declare or even call  yourself a doc or a priest or teacher or whatever profession unless yuo have the proof that one is license to that degree.

Salamat Mr. Felix Daray, may our God of Love and Peace continue to bless and guide all our hearts and minds to accomplish all the things that we set out to do. For all is possible through HIS GRACE..~

The first 2 years are conquered, now we begin our 3rd year of medicine as medical interns in the hospital. This is where we begin to branch out and find our specialty of liking (General Surgery, Pathology, OB-GYN, Emergency Medicine, Pulmonology, Internal Medicine, Neurology, Psychiatry, etc etc).

As I look back into the years from the beginning to the present~ what a ride and what a challenge it was.
The mountain that was basic sciences of medicine.

I am witness to the saying; indeed, if you have faith even as small as a mustard seed and tell the mountain to move, for sure, the mountain will move. For we can do all things through Jesus Christ who strengthens us.

Thanks for the blessings sir. May my batch mates and I be the head not the tail. And may we be blessed from the crown of the head to the soles of the feet. Blessed in the city and Blessed in the country. And to wherever we go.

In Jesus' Name.
Amen.

This is a friendly term that we call each other, 'te. Since we completed our 6th year of formal schooling from 4 years of college and finishing our 2nd year of medicine. 6 years over all. And another 2 more years to go, hehe.

We call each other 'Doctor' all the time as a term of endearment and motivation for those who are really good in what they do. The group that I am part of, are known in the hospital floor for our ambitious drive and dedication especially when we rotated in the General Surgery Ward, because all of us were there for 10 hours. and more.

The nursing staff, who we respect highly, started calling each of us as 'Doctors'.

One nurse, who is a friend of mine who came to our white coat, named Ms. Marliz called us, "the bright and handsome future bosses." hahahaha!

We have bled and sweated together that is why we call each other and motivate each other.

To my brothers in arms:

Joyson, Gary, Thiru, Shalab, Korosh, John, David, Bruce, Job, Vince,~~ I LOVE you guys.
See you guys in rotations.

We are now officially Medical Interns. ~~

GOD IS GREAT!

I dedicate this post to my brothers Job, Gary, Korosh and Shalab.

Bros....remember the good times (glorious struggles) when we studied for medical pharmacology, general pathology, systemic pathology, medical neurology exams for 5 days straight in the library-lounge. How we had no more than 1-2 hours of sleep a day, how we slept on our tables/ desks/ how we woke each other up and motivated each other to keep on going by making more 'BLACK COFFEE' or singing hahaha!

i am crying as I write this because it is so beautiful.

How Gary would start singing in Punjabi, and Korosh would start talking about the female anatomy after the 3rd day of no sleep puahahaha! How we all ACED our exams, nonetheless!! GOD IS GREAT!

I dedicate these pictures to OUR hard work. OUR Success~~~

Our class is a mixed bunch, we have alot of Indians, Pakistanis, Iranians, Arabs, Filipinos, Vietnamese, Chinese, and some puti. Pero the majority of my batch are mostly minority. hahaha.

In medicine, the minority is the majority. LOL.

I have a classmate who is white-american, and worked as a nurse anesthetist but started medical school.
She said, "In the hospital floor, the Filipinos dominate the ER, ICU, CCU, MEDSURG, PACU; and now in medical school..i see that you guys are also dominating too!"

Whenever someone says MEDICINE...the face of an Indian or Filipino usually hits one's face.

With this, I end this tribute to my medical batch with a simple quote that was given to me by my Love of My Life.

"How Far you go in life depends on your being tender with the young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving and tolerant of the weak and strong. Because someday in your life, you will have been all of these."

--George Washington Carver

And May God Bless Our Hands so that we may cure and do good more than bad, May God bless our minds that we are reminded to discern to evade overmedicating the patient as well as evade therapeutic nihilism. May God Bless our hearts so that we may be compassionate to the patient and not see him as a tumor, a growth, a cancer, a bacterial infection, but an individual with family and feelings. May God Bless our eyes so that we may see what the true problem is in regards to the treatment of an illness. May God Bless our souls so that we remember not to play at God and to remember our own frailties and to seek advice when we know not the answer to a question or a problem. May we be followers of the science that we are part of, to respect and uphold the honor of those physicians whose footsteps we follow, and to tred our own marks for those who are to follow after us.

And most of all, may we be worthy to be like the Divine Physician Himself, who is Christ Jesus.
Who knows no disease and frailty that was uncurable, and who conquered death itself~~the very primordial foe of the Physician.

God Bless Us.
Our Hearts, Our Minds, Our Bodies.
May we Save more.

-AMEN

Proud ko jamo sa mga Filipinos sa medical field. Ang mga Pinoy nurses ug Pinoy doctors, ug Pinoy Physical Therapists, Pinoy pharamcists, pinoy Occupational therapists, etc etc.

I did now know how many Filipino doctors there are in the USA until my friend Shalab told me that there are over 25,000 Filipino Doctors that are practicing in the USA. There are over 40,000 Indian docs that are practicign in the USA.

The 2 largest minorities that make up medicine in the USA are indeed, Filipinos and Indians, respectively.

I started medicine with my doubts on some Indians because of their strict demeanor, but after 2 years studying with them, and all other Desi-Americans (desi = south asians); I have come to love and respect them.
Very similar kaayo ang demeanor sa mga Indian sa Filipino. Ang Indian they are very good at following orders and answering questions to the immediate point. The Filipino is the quiet one; the one that usually is the silent leader, and the one that is good at correcting the answer and re-checking the supposed answer to be false.

In my batch there are 10 Filipinos. All of us hail from different regions of the Philippines. Bohol (me), Cagayon De Oro, Davao, Iloilo, Cebu, Leyte, Luzon.

An overwhelming majority of the Filipinos are Visayans. 8 of us are Visayans, and 2 are from Luzon.

Interesting, no?

I don't think my parents know about her,  yet, but I want you all to know that this woman has been the inpiratory engine that drove my 2nd year. When I was stressed out, she would comfort me...through her voice and her soft kisses. When we both were stressed and studying, her eyes would make me melt and her voice and the warmth of her presence drove me to persevere all the more. She is my inspiration.

She was there with me during my White Coat Ceremony. Taking my pictures and wiping the sweat that was on my face...and rubbing my back when I was crying during the event.

Stacy...I thank God I met you. Of all places...in medical school. lol.
You are such a light in my life..., baby...

In reality mao baya pud ni Belle nga daghan minority nga doctor kay sa white. I mean daghan Filipino,Pakistani,Iranian,ug Chinese,Japanese nga doctor sa E.R nga dili medyo E.R you know what I mean.

Interesting point, Raquel.

This is not known to many Americans, but the medical system in the United States is teeter-tottering, you know. We have a massive patient base over over 305 Million Americans, and very few doctors that are graduating medical school, which has been a trend in the last decade. The Medical System is overstretched. That is why the USMLE and the ECFMG Medical Licensing Boards are allowing more importation of foreign-trained Doctors into the country to fill in the ranks and the spots that are not filled.

The trend in medicine nowadays, especially amongst American Medical Students is going into specialty training. Most American Medical Students/ Doctors go into specialty areas such as: Surgery (General, Reconstructive, Bariatric, Orthopaedic, Pediatric), Anaesthesiology, Dermatology, Gastroenterology, Nephrology, Radiology, ENT, Pulmonology, Neurology etc etc. And as a result of this, the primary care spots are left open. Primary care spots include: Pediatrics, Family Practice, Internal Medicine, Pyschiatry, Cardiology, ER, Critical Care Medicine etc.

So, as a result, most foreign doctors that patriate into the United States end up getting primary care residencies. Many of them are sent to the rural regions of the United States~~ North Dakota, South Dakota, Tennessee, Kansas, Missouri, Iowa, Indiana, Colorado, Montana, etc etc. Because most American Grads are getting residencies in the highly competitive regions such as the urban areas (NYC, LA, PHILLY, BOSTON, DETROIT, HOUSTON etc etc). As it stands tho, the United States imports about 10,000 Foreign Doctors every year because of the medical situation. We simply don't have enough doctors. Not enough. That is why the role of nurses has increased in order to supplement the limited doctors graduating medicine in the united states every year. That is why we have NP (nurse practitioners), PA (physicians assistants), CRNAs (certified registered nurse anesthetists) in order to complement and augment the medical system.

In defense of the foreign doctors tho, I do hold alot of them with high regard and respect because in order for them to come to the 'states, they not only have to pass the national boards in their country, but have to pass the stringent USMLE (united states medical licensing exams and the national boards) as well as pass the ECFMG boards to even be qualified. And after that, then are sent to do residency training in the united states. So the new ones are highly qualified. Depends on person to person tho, we all know that.

For me, I know alot of Filipino Doctors that are practicing in the hospital where I rotated and in the hospitals that my parents work in. Graduates of prestigious school such as UPCM (University of Philippines College of Medicine) and UECM (University of the East College of Medicine) and the well known USTSOM (University of Santo Tomas School of Medicine). These guys, in my opinion, are damn fine physicians.

They are precise in their surgical procedures and techniques, and are always in time. I have seen a Dr. Villalobos, who is a Gastroenterologist in the hospital that i did my preceptorship in a couple of years ago...he was a graduate of UST, and was training American medical students, one of whom was already a 4th year resident and still making mistakes. Dr. VIllalobos embarassed him for his lack of skills in the diagnosis, he said, "You rotated with me for the pas 4 years and you still cannot perform a decent cholonoscopy? I will not sign your papers at all!" Strikto kaayo ning PILIPINONG DOCTOR.

IMHO, Philippine Medical Schools train better than American schools. Because by the time the filipino medical students start rotation, they already known surgical measures; and are already engrossed in clinical experience starting their 2nd year. In the United States, we do not start till our 3rd year, aside from hospital volunteering.

Highly respected and Highly educated ning Filipino when it comes to Medicine or Nursing.
We dominate the medical work force in the United States.

To Dr. Satheesh and Dr. Cooper, thank you sirs for allowing me to be a Medical Teaching Assistant in Gross Anatomy Lab. I enjoyed preparing the cadavers for teaching, as well as teaching the 1st year meds during Thoracic curricula. It was an honor to be selected to be a T.A, as well as learning from you two yet again.

Thankfully Yours,
Albrando
