He will be addressed as “Justice” from now on.
Gabriel Ingles was officially sworn into office as an associate justice of the Court of Appeals 20th division in Cebu City.
He took his oath before Cebu Regional Trial Court (RTC) Executive Judge Meinrado Paredes yesterday.
The simple morning ceremony was witnessed by Ingles’ wife Maria Alice who brought their 8-month-old daughter Annika Caelyn Gabrielle whom the justice considers their “inspiration.”
“It’s easy to read and recite the oath. (But) it’s difficult and challenging to bear witness to the oath; that is what I intend to do, faithfully and honestly, to the best of my abilities,” Ingles said in a short speech.
In an interview, Ingles said he will continue what he has done when he was an RTC judge for almost 10 years.
“I will remain independent and impartial. I will remain faithful to the oath that I took, the canon of the profession, and the office that I am going to assume,” said Ingles.
The judge also writes a CEBU DAILY NEWS column on recent rulings of the the Supreme Court.
He said he will “definitely” refuse to accept allowances from the local government units.
CA associate justices receive around P60,000 a month in allowances from both local government units in Cebu.
Ingles is the only judge who waived his monthly stipend from the Cebu City government and the Cebu provincial government when the issue on allowances broke out two years ago.
Three other judges, including Paredes, waived their allowances from the Capitol. Ingles also declined to accept an honorarium from Pinamungahan and a monthly allowance from Toledo City.
Ingles will assume his post as associate justice of the CA’s 20th division on March 21.
In an interview, Paredes lauded Ingles for doing a good job as RTC judge and spokesman of the Palace of Justice.
“We are very happy that a colleague has been elevated to the CA. He will make his contributions there,” Paredes said.
Ingles, who turned 59 last Feb. 27, has been a lawyer and a law professor since 1982.
He became dean of the University of San Carlos College of Law from 1994-2000 before he was elected president of the Integrated Bar of the Philippines Cebu City Chapter from 1997-1999.
Ingles was awarded Most Outstanding IBP Chapter President in the country. He was appointed RTC judge in October 2001.
