Residents seek Comelec control for Dingras, Ilocos Norte
By Freddie G. Lazaro
Residents of Dingras, Ilocos Norte appealed to the Commission on Election (Comelec) to put their town under its control in anticipation of possible violence that may happen in the coming May 10 elections here.
They expressed their fear of possible election violence in their 18– page petition filed before the Provincial Elections Office in Laoag, citing among others recent violent incidents which believed to be politically motivated.
They mentioned the killing of Rey Ruiz, board chairman of the Ilocos Norte Electric Cooperative (INEC) and a native of Dingras, who was gunned down and killed last September 2009.
They also cited the ambush on a convoy of campaign leaders and supporters, where Joen Caniete Diego, barangay chairwoman of Lanas, Dingras, also a candidate for councilor of Dingras, was killed.
There were eight persons who were wounded in that incident, among them an incumbent provincial board member and a town councilor of Dingras.
Philippine National Police Chief Director General Jesus Verzosa, in a visit to Laoag last Feb. 15, confirmed that Dingras was already placed in the list of “hot spots†in Ilocos Norte this election.-PNA
