Nahitabo nga nang recruit ang Phil. Army sa ROTC. Para ibala sa Mindanao. Jolo and Palawan. Gi laay ko sa ahong eskwela kay lagi boloktorian man, daghan ko ug hagbong sa mga subjects sa civil eng.g. Mao to nga naka hunahuna ko nga mo join na lang sa Phil. Army. Mi enlist ko. Nag training mi diha ra sa Tagbilaran. Ang among CO si Calimbayan. Nakalimot na man ko sa ijang first name. Ricardo man tingali to. Ang training officer namo was a Tagalog. Lt. Grio. Kining sundawo ta dali ra maka attract ug chicks. sa bag-o pang nag sugod ang kagubot sa Mindanao, kasagarang mga armas sa mga moklo, [that's how we soldiers called our muslim opponents], russian made. Like kalashnikov rifles

As I have said kining gera mora ra ug duwa duwa. Dili ba sa gagmay pa tang bata, mag gera gera man ta. Naa tay ginama nga posil posil. Dili man tanang higayon gera. Naa mau usahay mag attempt pod ug peace talks. Singgitan mi sa mga moklo, "dili mi mahadlok anang injong armalite. Plastic man na. Which was true. Pero hadlok sila ug garand. My preffered arms was a garand rifle. Kay mag imagine ko nga sniper konohay ko, expert marksman and sIYOTer. Pero sa tinood lang, in real life, perte nahong banga-a.

"In my opinion, the M1 rifle is the greatest battle implement ever devised." - General George S. Patton, Jr

Dili man hadlok ning gera, ilabi na kong dunay operation, you are on the offensive. Daghan man mo, naa pay mga back up nga tanks

timeout sa ha kay kalibangon ko. ;D

Armed Forces of the Philippines chief of staff Gen. Eduardo Año said the fighting in Marawi broke out when troops attacked a hideout for Muslim extremist leader Isnilon Hapilon.

The Abu Sayyaf’s Hapilon has reportedly been chosen to lead an Islamic State group branch in Southeast Asia and is on the U.S. Department of Justice list of most-wanted terrorists worldwide, with a reward of up to $5 million for his capture. An Arabic-speaking Islamic preacher known for his expertise in commando assaults, he pledged allegiance to the IS group in 2014, according to security officials.

Año said Hapilon, who is still recovering from wounds sustained in a military airstrike in January, and more than a dozen of his men summoned reinforcements from their allies in the Maute militant group. Ano said nearly 50 gunmen in all managed to enter the city.

One group of about 20 gunmen took position in a hospital, where they raised a black Islamic State group-style flag at the gate, and 10 other militants went near a provincial jail where troops and policemen engaged them in fighting, he said.
Troops sealed off major entry and exit points to prevent Hapilon from escaping, Año told The Associated Press by telephone from Moscow, where he was accompanying President Rodrigo Duterte on an official visit to Russia.

“They did some burnings, they showed up in another area so it looked chaotic, but it’s actually a small group facing an overwhelming number of government forces,” Año said.
“We will conduct house-to-house clearing and do everything to remove the threat there. We can do that easily,” Año said, but added it was more difficult in an urban setting because of the need to avoid civilian casualties.

The Maute group is one of less than a dozen new armed Muslim groups that have pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group and formed a loose alliance in the southern Philippines in recent years. Hapilon was reportedly designated the leader of the alliance.
The Maute has been blamed for a bomb attack that killed 15 people in southern Davao city, Duterte’s hometown, last September and a number of attacks on government forces in Lanao, although it has faced setbacks from a series of military offensives.

Last month, troops backed by airstrikes killed dozens of Maute militants and captured their jungle camp near Lanao del Sur’s Piagapo town. Troops found homemade bombs, grenades, combat uniforms and passports of suspected Indonesian militants in the camp, the military said.
While pursuing peace talks with two large Muslim rebel groups in the south of the predominantly Roman Catholic nation, Duterte has ordered the military to destroy smaller extremist groups which have tried to align with the Islamic State group.

Duterte had repeatedly threatened to place the south, the scene of decades-long Muslim uprisings, under martial law if terrorism spiraled out of control. Human rights groups have expressed fears that martial law powers could further embolden Duterte, whom they have accused of allowing extrajudicial killings of thousands of drug suspects in a crackdown on illegal drugs. On Tuesday, on account of the fighting in Marawi, the President imposed martial law on all of Mindanao. — AP

At least 10 soldiers killed in Marawi ‘friendly fire’
Agence France-Presse / 11:25 AM June 01, 2017

At least 10 soldiers killed in Marawi ‘friendly fire’News
(Updated, 11:45 a.m.) Military airstrikes aimed at Islamist militants who are battling soldiers in a southern city  killed 10 of their own men and injured seven others, the defense secretary said on Thursday.

“A group of our military armed men were hit by our own airstrikes. Ten killed,” Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana told reporters in Manila, adding the incident happened on Wednesday.

Security forces have been battling militants flying the black flags of the Islamic State (IS) group in Marawi, a major Muslim city in the predominantly Catholic Philippines, since Tuesday last week.

The military has bombed and fired rockets from attack helicopters throughout the conflict with the militants, who have been hiding in residential areas holding hostages.

About 2,000 civilians are also trapped in the militant-held areas, according to the local government.

Fire rages at several houses following airstrikes by Philippine Air Force bombers to retake control of Marawi city from Muslim militants who lay siege for nearly a week, Saturday, May 27, 2017 in southern Philippines. Philippine military jets fired rockets at militant positions Saturday as soldiers tried to wrest back control of a southern city from gunmen linked to the Islamic State group, witnesses said. Civilians waved flags from their windows to show they are not combatants. AP

Military chiefs have repeatedly said the assaults involved “precision” and “surgical” airstrikes, and assured they were not harming any of the trapped civilians or hostages.

“It’s sad but sometimes it happens in the fog of war. The coordination was not properly done,” Lorenzana said Thursday as he announced the deaths.

He told Agence France-Presse (AFP) later via text message that seven soldiers had also been wounded.

The clashes erupted when security forces raided a house to arrest Isnilon Hapilon, a veteran Filipino militant regarded as IS’s leader in the Philippines. He is on the US government’s list of most-wanted terrorists.

Authorities said they were taken by surprise when dozens of gunmen emerged to protect Hapilon and then went on a rampage through Marawi, which has a population of 200,000.

Most of the residents had fled the city but the International Committee of the Red Cross has repeatedly expressed deep concern for those who remained trapped, and called for a humanitarian ceasefire

“I think it’s horrific for the civilian people who are in there and we really hope that both sides can agree that the civilians should be given the opportunity to come out,” the deputy head of the ICRC’s Philippine delegation, Martin Thalmann, told AFP in Marawi on Wednesday.

President Rodrigo Duterte declared martial law across the entire southern region of Mindanao in response to the crisis, which he described as the start of a major campaign by IS to establish a foothold in the Philippines.

Eighty-nine militants have been killed in the fighting, and the gunmen have murdered 19 civilians, the military said on Wednesday.

The announcement of the friendly fire deaths brings the number of security forces killed to 31, and the combined death toll to 139./rga

Civilians waved flags from their windows to show they are not combatants. AP

John 3:16-18 ESV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.

last time nga mi salida ko sa maribojoc for my double program of chess and basketball, usa ka batan-on miduol naho. bals, wa na ka kaila naho sa. ingon pod ko, wa na jud. katawa sija. imo kong silingan. anak ko ni mike ug ni ellen. unja estorya sija. kasabot man ko sa imong gibuhat ba. pero lopig ka naho kay motor jud ahong gihatag. seaman diay sija. unja pag uli, gitagaan nija ug motor ijang amigo para himoong habal habal. katawa ko ug doro. kana maoy bata. he learned a lesson from me. that we should share our blessings

wala pa jud mahuman ning estorya sa ambush. saad ra ba naho nga humanon ni. i dont know. maybe im just trying to block the memory of that day, the terror and fear that i experienced. dili man ko hadlokan but on that memorable day w/c became a turning point of my life, nag korog korog jud ko sa kahadlok, naka ihi ko sa ahong karsones. i told myself, di na ko kauli ug maribojoc ani. naa koy  amigo nga manghod pa naho also from maribojoc, sundawo, patay pod sa engkwentro. dugay na sijang namatay. bata pa.

so when i think of how fragile life is, i try to live my life the best way i could by always sharing my blessings. kay mao man ni sugo sa atong GINOO nga tabangan nato ang atong isig ka tawo, especially the poor

MINNETONKA, Minn. — This ruthless man is very tranquil. He falls asleep easily around the world in seats unsuited for sleeping. He giggles a child’s treble giggle when you don’t expect. He asks charming novice questions about baseball. He can speak measuredly at length or speak not at all, while sanguine with either. His capable wit emerges only on soft occasion. Chess people rave about his surpassing calm.

It seems the only place to avoid Wesley So would be the other side of a chessboard. There, he will take his tranquility and shred you with it. There, he seems to avoid grimacing, or sighing, or running his hands through his hair, or all the things people tend to do when presented with high ambition, time limits and the eternal 64-square puzzle.

So has risen, at 23, to No. 2 in the world, lodged behind only 26-year-old Norwegian Magnus Carlsen, who has been No. 1 for almost the whole 2010s. At the barbaric board, So has stormed into a realm found by only 11 other humans, a peak Elo rating of above 2800, a mastery of a game so bloody violent.

“Oh, it’s a violent game!” said Lotis Key, So’s adoptive mother, formerly a movie actress in the Philippines who immigrated to the United States in the 1980s. “Extremely. I say this game has an undercurrent of violence that is unsurpassed in any ball sport. It’s a very violent game, very aggressive . . . This is, once you start, someone’s got to die here. And on his level, even a draw is a small death, because he loses points when he draws. When you’re that high, drawing is like losing.”

In this savage pursuit, So, a calm native Filipino who plays under the U.S. chess federation — and credits the latter with enabling his upsurge — went unbeaten for 67 matches in a row in elite play from last July to this April. He won major events in St. Louis (August) and London (December) and the Netherlands (January), then won the U.S. championship in St. Louis in April. He won and won without bombast, even if his knight-takes-F2 move in a round in April in St. Louis did stoke rapture from all those people who know precisely why a knight-takes-F2 move could stoke rapture. With fellow bright lights Fabiano Caruana (No. 4 in the world) and Hikaru Nakamura (No. 9), So has helped make one hell of an American chess era while still not American just yet. He did all this while waking sometimes in his adoptive home here and getting going on his eight hours of chess study such that his adoptive mother tells him, “You should really wash your face first.”

“‘Oh, okay,’” Key quotes So’s usual response, as she sits across the cafe table from him at a library near Minneapolis.

His own voice sounds calming, soothing, something you might prefer on the radio if you wake in the wee hours, as when he says, “It’s my first time winning the U.S. championship, so I feel like I accomplished something, hopefully, because all the great local players starting in the early 1920s have won this tournament, and I’d never won it yet. So right now I’m, by rating, the number one player in the U.S., but I feel if I didn’t win the U.S. championship, it’s not validating my profession.”

With the profession further validated, they completed the post-tournament hubbub, made arrangements to depart St. Louis, got the taxi to the plane, stood in line, boarded, took off and only then, Key said, “He’ll turn to me, and say, ‘Oh my, I actually won it.’ We were on our way to Azerbaijan.”

‘He’s still improving’
Even among the chess-initiated, So’s calm stands out.

“There’s almost a seeming effortlessness to his ascent that’s a bit surprising to me,” said Daniel Lucas, the director of publications at the United States Chess Federation. “I think about Joe DiMaggio or Roger Federer who make what they do look easy, when what they’re doing is extraordinarily hard.”

“I wouldn’t say like a machine, but he is very precise, very precise, and I think that’s something unique about him,” said Alexander Onischuk, the American grandmaster from Ukraine who coaches the chess team at Texas Tech, and who opposed So in the U.S. final in April. “He doesn’t make big mistakes. He makes minor mistakes from time to time. We all do. But I’ve never seen him make a big mistake, a big blunder. That is very impressive. And look, all his results are very stable.”

“It always looks like he’s half playing the game and half thinking about a pleasant memory,” said Tony Rich, the executive director of the Chess Club and Scholastic Center of St. Louis, the organizing body for the U.S. title event. Rich finds So “self-effacing,” and fancies a story of when So played a post-tournament exhibition last year against consensus best-player-ever Garry Kasparov, and Kasparov looked the more theatrical of the two. “He doesn’t try to play the flashy move just to make everyone happy,” Rich said. “He plays very concretely. He just seems to play the right move at the right time.”

Thus did Kasparov tweet last December, in congratulating So on the Grand Chess Tour win in London, “He showed great consistency and, bad news for opponents, he’s still improving.”

On Thursday, So and Key made off for Norway and then a binge of events in Europe. It’s plausible that over the Atlantic, he contorted himself into some posture that allowed for sleep, and slept. “Oh my g***,” Key said. “When we’re on our way to church in the car — yeah, he can fall asleep anywhere, anytime, night or day, within seconds. And everybody starts laughing in the car” — that includes Key’s husband, Renato Kabigting, and their daughter, Abbey — “because we can see Wesley’s head. He’ll be talking and then the sudden …” She droops her head. “And we’re all like [whispering]. I always say he must have a good conscience somewhere in there, because he does not struggle with complete blackout.”

“Do you dream about chess?”

“Never,” he said.

After a brief discussion on sleep — he also does so in taxis, lounges, so on — it comes up that he’s No. 2 in a world of 7 billion.

“Well, not all of them play chess,” he deadpans.

Then: “Well, I never thought I would be number two. But now that I’m here, I want to try to be number one. I’m not entirely satisfied with number two. I mean, I’m very happy to get there, but I hope I can reach further.”

‘It’s pretty disciplined’
So has emerged from out of the chess way, with less of the formal chess training. A shy boy who took up the game in earnest around age 8 and would wake to study chess books and whatnot, he turned up as part of the Philippines team at the Chess Olympiad in Turin, Italy, in 2006, at age 12. By January 2012, when he prepared to venture to the United States to play for chess powerhouse Webster University in St. Louis, he held a world ranking of No. 98. He refers to that as low, revealing an elite athlete’s mind-set.

That mind-set seems to have taken itself into the pool at his adoptive family’s local gym. When So moved to Minnesota with Key’s and Kabigting’s family, he couldn’t swim, a reality odd to Key given a homeland of 7,107 islands. Now he swims nonstop for about a mile, they say.

“Backstroke, and also front-stroke,” he said charmingly.

“Ah, well,” he said, “chess is not just about playing. It’s other aspects. I have to improve my mental state. I have to be tougher, more confident, more comfortable playing the top guys. More experienced. Out of the top 10 or top 20 in the world, I have the least experience out of all of it. I’ve only been a chess professional for two-and-a-half years. . . . And I also need to improve my physical conditioning, because each game can last to anywhere up to six hours and each tournament usually has around 10 games, so that’s a lot of work, and the person with more energy in the last hour has a lot of advantage.”

Further: “And also, I need to improve my chess skills, too, my end game. And my middle game. Knowing when to take risks, knowing when not to take risks, and finding my own style. In chess, every player has their own style. Some people can be really aggressive, while others can be more calm. I think I tend to play more quietly, and I tend to play longer, like more solidly. I don’t just go out there and . . . ”

He trailed off there.

“I don’t really start the game with a bang,” he said earlier. “I don’t go for all-out complications at a very early stage of the game. I mean, some players just want to fight: You know, it’s either a win or a loss, it’s very unstable.”
