US-made Cars the Best?
« on: June 19, 2010, 01:25:37 AM »
By STEPHEN MANNING, AP Business Writer

U.S. automakers have surpassed foreign brands for the first time in a survey that measures the quality of new cars and trucks.

J.D. Power and Associates said Thursday that owners of vehicles made by Detroit automakers reported fewer problems on average during the first 90 days of ownership than those built by companies based overseas.

It was the first time that has happened in the 24 years the industry research group has conducted the annual quality study that is a closely watched measure of the durability and reliability of vehicles.

U.S. automakers have long lagged foreign brands, especially those from Asian manufacturers like Toyota, which many consumers believe produce higher quality cars and trucks than General Motors, Ford and Chrysler.

But J.D. Power said Ford Motor Co. showed some of the biggest gains in quality among individual brands, moving into the fifth spot. Porsche was the top scorer. Toyota Motor Corp., which has suffered through huge safety recalls earlier this year, saw its score drop.

Tungod kay naka experience nako ug tag-iya both american & japanese cars mao ni akong ika tampo.

Akong 1st car was a PONTIAC Firebird new. After 5 years with 60,000 miles on the D-board naka experience nako ug problem sa transmission. Akong gi trade in after gi ayo ang transmission ug HONDA Civic new. Last year miabot na ug 180,000 ang milage but still runnin good. Akong gihatag ang Civic sa akong ig-agaw nga bag-ong abot gikan sa ato ug ila kining gi drive paingon didto sa San Francisco kay tua man sila namuyo. hangtud karon nagdagan lang gihapon sa maayong condition. Ang ako karong sakyanan mo trabaho was a Toyota Camry 1996, gibaligya nis akong kauban sa trabho nako ug 1,000. Miabot na ug 154,000 ang milage ani niya. So para naho, proven na ang japanese cars. Walay labot tong mga na re call lately...

American-made automobiles are good.

Cadillac, GMC, Cheverolet, Buick, Chrysler, Ford, Lincoln are all good brands.

too bad we've never tried any american car and have no plans of having one anytime soon.  my brother used to have a ford.  i remember him complaining that it was a guzzler.  we used to have a honda civic, which i complained much about because my legs had to to be stretched much to reach the accelerator.  it was uncomfortable and dangerous for me.  now we have a not-so-new mercedes, efficient and trustworthy.  i finally found my car.  but american cars still make me curious.

you are wrong coju, dia pa man ang mga parts diri sa Michigan himu-a, hangtud karon, so far.

production, maybe... but the parts design, I guess not.  I know for a fact that LEAR designs electronics for american cars.

Also, bisan Asian cars, sa Americas naman giassemble.  Check the VINS for corresponding assembly locations.

Para nako, depende ra jud na sa timing ug sa paggamit ug paggam.  Labi na sa US nga everything is now disposable and almost everything is for lease.

i agree! Only exotic foreign (almost hand made) cars are not manufactured in the States. The rest were all assembled here.

Yup. It's competitive among the American brands, but has to compete for the Toyota Land Cruiser/ Toyota Sequoia , Mercedes GL-400 series, Nissan Armada etc.

We also have alot of Suburbans, F-250s, F-150s, as well as Navigators here. All of which are great SUVs and perfect for the winter terrain.

Not many people would think that really expensive luxury SUVs can perform to the level of say larger SUVs, but that is not the case.

The Porsche Cayenne Turbo (~ $140,000) can rip through snow like knife through butter.

Cayenne turbo drift Nurburg

This is an example of beautiful German Engineering...

Kan,

I will agree with you that in general, Japanese Automobiles are designed for excellence. I'm a confident owner of a Mitsubishi Montero Sport (Pajero Sport) and can tell you that the Japanese designed my vehicle as an 'All Terrain SUV'. It can drive through snow, through muddy terraine, off-road in around hills/mountains, on paved roads, on grassy roads etc. The V6 engine is as competitive as any other American-built SUV, handling is excellent: given its power steering and easy access add-ons.

Having driven my father's Toyota 4-Runner and my mother's Toyota Sequoia; the same can be said for Toyota vehicles. These vehicles are built not only for comfort, luxury (if you go to higher-end models), as well as performance and safety standards. The Toyota dealership is popular here due to :
1. Economic affordability
2. General Safety standards
3. Performance standards
4. Luxury , ease of access standards
5. Design: interior & exterior

Thus, making it a competitive brand, even amongst the American-built automobiles.

PS. Toyota is no longer a 'purely' Japanese company. Most of the Toyota automobiles are manufactured here in the United States.

---

In defense of American automobile industry tho, the quality of American automobiles have risen these past 2 decades and are known for their endurance, performance, safety, power and luxury comforts. Ford, for example, is the main competitor to Toyota. And additionally, there are really good American brands out there (for the average buyer to the high-end buyer):

1. Cadillac
2. Lincoln
3. Chevrolet
4. GMC
5. Ford/Mercury
6. Chrysler
