Preventing Car Theft

Despite these recessionary times, car thieves persist in stealing cars, and, these days, motorists simply can’t afford the prospect of having such a valuable investment stolen. For this reason, this month we’ve decided to compile a list of useful tips to help secure your car against such unwelcome attention.

Tips When Parking Your Car:
Hide Your Belongings: Keep iPods, sat navs, laptops and other valuable items out of view when leaving your car unattended. If you must store belongings in your vehicle, place them in the boot. An Gardai Siochana also encourages drivers who have sat nav units fitted in their car not to programme them with the location of their home!

Turn Wheels Towards the Curb: Turning your car’s wheels towards the curb when parking is a simple yet effective way of making a car thief’s job more difficult, as it means the car won’t be easy to tow away. You should always engage the handbrake, too.

Bring Your Keys With You: This may seem like a no-brainer, but almost 20 percent of cars stolen have the keys in them! Most modern cars are difficult to steal without the keys, and as a result, thieves will always try to get their hands on keys first. So, always take your car keys with you, even if you only are running to the ATM, post box or to pay for petrol.

Check Windows Are Closed: We have all left our car’s windows open unintentionally at some stage. You don’t want to make a car thief’s job any easier by leaving the windows open, even if it’s only by a crack, so always double-check.

Park in Busy Areas: Research reveals that over half of all car thefts occur at night. For this reason, you should only park in well-lit and busy areas, both of which will put car thieves off.

Precautions While Driving:
Derived from ‘car-hijacking,’ the term ‘car jacking’ refers to instances when drivers are forcibly ejected from their cars by thieves. Car jacking is most likely to occur at moments when the driver is getting in or out of their car, such as at traffic lights or car parks. Although instances of car jacking are rare in Ireland, it does happen, so you should always be vigilant while driving. Here are some simple tips to help prevent it.

-Always lock your car doors whilst driving.
-Keep your windows closed when stopped in traffic.
-Avoid being boxed in by traffic, and leave room between your car and the vehicle in front to facilitate an emergency getaway.
-If a car jacker demands your keys, just give them up. Always remember that no matter how valuable your car is, it is not worth the risk of serious injury.

How to Secure Your Car:

Install an Alarm: If your car doesn’t already have an alarm and immobiliser installed, then get one fitted! Most modern cars will have both of these systems fitted. There’s a wide variety of alarms to choose from nowadays, varying from basic, cost-effective units, right up to high-tech alarms that send texts to your mobile phone when the alarm is triggered! Another good idea is to put stickers on your car showing it has an alarm installed. Do not get stickers that display which brand of alarm system is in the car, however.

Crook Locks: Put simply, crook locks are designed to make a car thief’s job more difficult. They are mechanical locking devices that can be clamped either onto the gear stick or steering wheel (to prevent the thief from putting the car in gear or being able to steer the car). Again, crook locks are a cheap but effective way of putting thieves off a potential target!

Disable Your Car: When you are leaving your car parked over longer periods, such as in airport car parks while away on holidays, you should disconnect your car’s battery and the ignition fuse. Both procedures can be done in a matter of minutes but make a car impossible to start until reversed.

Hiding Spare Keys: An Garda Siochana recommend that you do not hide spare keys in your car. Car thieves know all of the usual places where people hide keys, and will take the time to look for them. Hide an extra set at home instead!

Registration Number Etching: All of your car’s windows, such as the windscreen, rear window, side windows and even the mirrors, should have the car’s registration number etched into them. This simple procedure can help to deter thieves, as it makes the car more difficult and costly to sell on.

Keep Details Close to Hand: Keep your car’s registration and license plate number in your wallet or purse. This means that in the event of car theft, you will have the relevant info immediately to hand to present to the Gardai. Do not leave valuable information, such as your tax book or insurance policy documentation, in the car, however, as a thief could use these to sell your vehicle on!
