Russia's largest car maker AvtoVAZ announced it would start
mass production of the Lada Kalina Sport model, Moscow's Vedomosti business daily reported Tuesday.
This is the same model that Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin drove for over 2,000 km. during his televised Far East journey last month.
The decision was made due to the high demand following Putin's tour, a maiden trip for the Lada Kalina Sport model.
Nearly all the orders AvtoVAZ received were for the cars of the same bright yellow dye of the "Putin's" hatchback, said Igor Burenkov, spokesman for the car maker.
The price for a unit will be 374,000 rubles (US$ 12,460) compared with 260,000 rubles (US$ 8,666) for "regular" Lada Kalina.
Putin's spokesman Dmitri Peskov made it clear that it was AvtoVAZ's initiative to approach the prime minister with a proposal to drive a Lada Kalina during his journey.
AvtoVAZ presented three similar cars to the government, and two of them were given back, said Peskov.
Up to now, AvtoVAZ has produced only 100 cars of that model per month, but none is in yellow color. (PNA/Xinhua)
