Pinay flies to US to attend daughter's wedding, is sent back to PHL

Carina Grande in an earlier visit to Seattle.

US immigration authorities at the Seattle International Airport are being accused of harassing, insulting and eventually deporting a Filipino early this month.

Carina Yonzon Grande, 63, said she went to the US to attend her daughter's wedding.

But immigration officials at the airport allegedly held her claiming she was undocumented and threatened to put her in jail if she refuses to be deported.

She stressed that she had the proper documents to travel to the US and that she had traveled to the US 13 times in the span of two decades. Grande, who also worked for the Asian Development Bank (ADB), has also traveled to Australia, Italy, Hong Kong, Singapore, Austria, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, Vanautu, Fiji, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Uzbekistan and Pakistan.

The officials also called her a liar and accused of her trying to work in the US as a caregiver. A supervisor, a certain Mr. Caldwell, warned Grande to tell them what they wanted to hear or suffer the consequences.

"If I lie, they would have to arrest me and put me in jail. He even showed me the jail cell. I said, 'I am telling the truth, and that they can put me in jail because I will never ever admit doing the things I am wrongly being accused of.'"

Grande said Caldwell gave her 2 options: be deported to the Philippines on the next flight or be thrown in jail and barred from entering the US for 5 years.

After being held for 6 hours without food and water, Grande eventually agreed to return to the Philippines.

"Exhausted, hungry, and sleep-deprived, I chose (to be deported)...It is disheartening that at my age, I didn't receive any respect from these officials," Grande said.

Ken Shaw, the fiancé of Grande's daughter, supported her statement.

"She was cruelly interrogated for 6 hours after a 15-hour flight and held without food and water. Derogatory racial slang was hurled her way and she was shown and threatened with a jail cell. Her belongings were careless rifled through, wedding cards and gifts from relatives for the couple plainly visible throughout this process," Shaw said in a separate statement.

He said he tried to get the full names of the immigration officials but was told there was no need to disclose their names to the public.

"My fiancée is now heart broken – not only for her mother having to miss her wedding but also for the cruel treatment she was forced to endure by the government of the country she now calls home," Shaw said.

In a statement, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said they are ready to assist Filipino travelers who feel aggrieved by the treatment of foreign immigration agents.

DFA Spokesperson Raul Hernandez said millions of Filipinos enter other countries with little or no incidents.

He also said that the government expects all nations to treat Filipino travelers with respect and dignity and to observe international standards for the treatment of foreigners.

bad hair day for those immigration officers?

immigration officers betting that they could catch 20 TNTs for the day, and she just happens to be the 20th right on deadline?

the alignment of the planets made those officers see martians where there are none?

plain, old, simple racism.
