US envoy impresses Boholanos
« on: September 10, 2007, 01:19:45 AM »

FIRST RADIO VISIT. US Ambassador Kristie Kenny makes on record as the first US ambassador to visit a radio station here. She was interviewed by DYRD General Manager Peter Dejaresco during her radio visit last Friday.

The visit of US Ambassador Kristie Kenney last Thursday left some lasting good impressions on the Boholanos.

She personally launched an environmental project dubbed as "Going Green: An Environmental Toolkit for the Tourism Sector in the Philippines."

Her whirlwind visit ot the province just lasted for eight hours. HOwever, her first official visit brought her closer to thousands of Boholanos since she made an unprecendented radio visit to dyRD that beamed a 20-minute live interview during the prime afternoon program "Action Line" last Thursday.

"The people remain as the vital link between the US and the country," she declared while citing that friends and relatives of the same countries have long shared in the partnership.

She was amazed on the tourism potentials of Bohol, including the natural green and the tarsier.

The exclusive interview over dyRD gave a firsthand account of what the ambassador has to say on various concerns.

On corruption, Kenney said that ther is no any other way to minimize corruption except by "becoming mre transparent" with dealings in governance.

The US governmetn also adheres to the need to enhance tax collection by government.

She cited the growing economy in the country today, saying the Arroyo government is doing well in inviting investors to pour their resources into several business ventures in various parts of the country.

In fact, she said, Bohol should be doubly proud because of its resources which has become a tourist attraction in the country today.

The uniqueness of the spots found here is coupled with the warm hospitality of the Boholanos, the US envoy stressed.

Commenting on alleged human rights violations, Kenny stressed that every case should be investigated.

This was another greedy exclusive move of DYRD and the Chronicle as I was told by Batchoy Alba at ICM mall the other day.
They cash in on everything there is to cash in on.
Did you catch the screw up that got them a legal letter from the Atty of the Eskaya Resort?
Something on the bounds of they must do better news reporting!
Maybe instead of always pushing the smaller media establishments around and cashing in on everything under the sun they should slow down grab a gear and check the facts first before printing it.
I am just a Green horn in journalism. Snicker snicker!!!

Shopping, and more!
Havaianas, US Ambassador Kenney and Go Green

Proem:
·         Food for the soul: In faith be like the wind chimes, hold steady until faith, like the winds, moves you to joy.
·         Our sincere sympathy and condolences go out to Manny Baluyot’s family and to his friends and co-workers with Philippine Gift of Life. This has been a very trying time for everyone involved. Our thoughts and prayers are with them. He is survived by wife Maam Fancy who is the president of the Philippine Gift of Life; seven children and 12 grandchildren. Sir Manny served as a member of the Brotherhood of Christian Businessmen and Professional, a volunteer of the Philippine National Red Cross and an NBI agent in 1963. Interment is today, Sept. 8 at the Victoria Memorial Park after a requiem mass at Saint Joseph Cathedral.
·         Luciano Pavarotti, the Italian singer whose ringing, pristine sound set a standard for operatic tenors of the postwar era, died Sept. 6 at his home near Modena , in northern Italy . He was 71.
·         Congratulations to Bol-anon poet Noel “Roy” Tuazon who recently won a Palanca Award (3rd prize) for Short Story in Cebuano, Kundat sa Unang Gugma. He also won the Gawad Komisyon 2007 Poetry in Cebuano Category. According to Vida May Tirol (who posted the message at tubagbohol) Roy is an original member of the Kaliwat ni Karyapa (KaKa), a group of writers in Tagbilaran. Sir Noel was my Literature teacher in 1998 at University of Bohol (he’s kind enough to excuse me when I came late to his 7:30a.m. TTh Lit class). He went back teaching at Divine Word College (now HNU), then left Bohol for greener pasture. Home is where the heart is, he’s back teaching at HNU. I met him last week at HNU where I was busy for the myHNU sim (the first in Bohol ).
·         Important events to remember:  Mother Teresa’s10th death anniversary, Sept. 5.  Born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu, Mother Teresa was a Roman Catholic nun who founded the Missionaries of Charity and won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 for her humanitarian work. For over forty years, she ministered to the needs of the poor, sick, orphaned, and dying in Kolkata (Calcutta), India; and The September 11, 2001 attacks (often referred to as 9/11) consisted of a series of coordinated terrorist suicide attacks by Islamic extremists on that date upon the United States of America.
·         From eventologist and icon Tim Yap: The main reason why I joined Celebrity Duets is because I’m a volunteer for the Philippine National Red Cross. It’s just more of an advocacy and a cause. Kawang-gawa ko. Ive been blessed in my life so ito. Celebrities are paired with legendary singers in this singing competition. Hosted by Asia’s Songbird Regine Velasquez and the Ultimate Singer and Songwriter Ogie Alcasid Celebrity Duets has been popular in the United States and produced by Fremantle Limited, Simon Cowell, a judge of American Idol, invades Pinoy TV screens via GMA-7 to give famous celebrities a chance to showcase their singing prowess. Unlike the typical singing contests, the Celebrity Duets contestants are not only competing for the cash and special prizes for personal use but also to win the cash prize which they will donate for their chosen charitable institution.  To vote, type Name of Contestant and send too 367 for Smart and Talk N Text and 2364 for Globe, Sun and Touch Mobile. Watch Celebrity Duets every Saturday after Bitoy’s Funniest Videos" on GMA-7.
·         Could it be true that Capitol employees could no longer “cheat” their daily time record (DTR)? Better late than never, the provincial government has been using the biometrics to replace the old DTR.   Before, employees could “doctor” the DTR, in this technology the personal thumb mark of the employees would serve as “attendance.” Read: No proxies. Whether they like it or not the employees are “force” to wait for their turn to have their thumb mark scan. No more bulakbol please!
·         Could it be true that a government-owned car (with a green plate number) is said to be a “sex car?” According to the tsismosos relayed this information that the driver and his girls would perform “circus” inside the car. Mmm…car for pleasure? The official should investigate this matter because it sells like hotcake in the Capitol.
·         Hookups and a breakup! September flings are just coming and a couple of “ Bohol ’s who’s who” are looking for new mates to keep warm, as the temperatures begin to drop.
First up, serial dater “Baby A” (who’s a self-proclaimed Bohol ’s elite because of her step dad’s vast of richness)  has found a new boy to lock lips with. Her latest conquest? Her new “barkada”! The message of the film, A Love Story, certainly doesn't apply to “Baby A,” (read: layuan mo siya..kailangan ko siya) who was seen making out with the guy (who looks like a college student) on many different occasions (during Friday and Saturday in bars).
Secondly, a male mobile businessman took his female “friend” (not a well known girl in the city) to Alona beach in Panglao last week. True Very Reliable Source (VRS) says they were "making out all over the place. They are thinking they own the place.”
Lastly, a young married businessman has broken up with his labidab because of his “infidelity?” This businessman, who is in his early 30s loves to date young girls (below 18 years old, the most vulnerable, read: taking advantage of his face). A source close to this man told True, “It was a distance thing, a break up.”
Are we shocked? Not hardly.

***
An everyday thing like strolling at the mall can be a mini-adventure in itself. If you know where to look.
Recently, True found himself at Island City mall (ICM) for simple dinner and a movie and the experience was far from interesting.
I’m not a mallrat and I seldom go malling unless I have to something to buy.
It was three years ago that a modern mall was introduced to the Boholanos. Family and friends used to shop in Cebu . How things can change with time…not anymore, people with different taste buds can choose what they want in mall with lots of signature tenant shops. I just learned this from True VRS that ICM management (headed by Sir Mario Cirujales) is “choosy” because ICM wants to project as a first class mall comparable to the malls in Manila . First class enetertainments and events can be witness at the ICM (especially weekends) withtopcaliber artists and bands from Manila. This is because customers like us deserve the best from the best mall in Bohol.

My agents cum nurses from the Holy Name University who were involved in the myHNU sim launching became “mallrats” for the day. One Kareen "Kimi" Trabajo says: ICM Screenville turns between public interest and personal relationship. Screenville is surely something that is worth to measure up and bring entertainment alive to the people lives. Sulit imong pagtan-aw. In fact, it would seem like there are more who are coming in than those who have left.
The famous Havaianas holds their first pop-up shop at the Island City Mall (see separate story) making Icm the best choice of international companies like Havaianas.
Signature tenants are coming in this year, says Ariel Fullido, a total shopping leisure for all Boholanos.

Ambassador Kenney and Go Green
She always has interesting, famous lines when she gives speeches. The woman has a sweet, soft voice and her words are dear to the hearts of the Filipinos since her arrival to the Philippines last year.
I have total admiration for this woman because watching her on television helping people is simply inspiring. She is elegantly approachable.  She is no other than US Ambassador to the Philippines Kristie Kenney.
She visited Bohol last Friday to focus on the many partnerships and initiatives the U.S. Government works on in the city and immediate region.
The Ambassador said that Bohol is “leading the way, several times before…”
The wide variety of partnerships between the American people and Boholanos is a great example of the continuing friendship between our two countries, she said. More than that, she encouraged all people to create bright future.
During her visit, Ambassador Kenney met with local government and business leaders, including Gov. Erico Aumentado, Rep. Edgar Chatto, David Valdes, the WWF President and TB LINC stakeholders.
Ambassador Kenny’s visit to Bohol was her first time.  She had a face to face encountered with world’s smallest primate, the tarsier.  The internationally-acclaimed Loboc Children’s Choir also draws in tourists. Ambassador Kenney, too, made sure she saw Loboc town’s famous choral group when she visited Loboc. It was covered by GMA 7’s Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho last night.
The Ambassador’s visit was highlighted y a joint celebration of development partnerships featuring the signing of a MOA for a Bohol Childhood TB Control Program and launching of Going Green: An Environmental Toolkit for the Tourism Sector in the Philippine Coastal Areas. Both initiatives are directly supported by the US Agency for International Development.
“…Create healthy children and healthy planet… and going green,” Ambassador Kenney said.
Her biography (thanks to Karen Schinnerer, Deputy Press Attaché at the Public Affairs Section of the American Embassy in Manila ) says: Ambassador Kenney served as executive secretary of the State Department for three years, the first woman to hold the key position. In that capacity, she headed a staff of 185 persons responsible for inter0agency policy coordination and crisis management working directly for Secretary of State Colin Powell and Madeleine Albirght.
Ambassador Kenney’s overseas postings include Economic Counselor at the US Mission to International organizations in Geneva , Economic Officer at the US Embassy in Argentina and Consular officer at the US Embassy in Jamaica . Her Washington assignments include director of the State Department Operations center, a detail to the White House as a member of the National Security Council staff, and Political-Military Officer in the Office of NATO Affairs.
She holds a Master’s Degree in Latin American Studies from Tulane University , and a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Clemson University . Ambassador Kenney also attended the National war College. She speaks Spanish and French.
She is a recipient of the State department’s Distinguished Honor Award, the Arnold Raphel Award (for leadership, motivation and mentoring) and several honor awards. An avid tennis player and skier, she is married to William Brownfield, a Senior Foreign Service Officer, currently the US Ambassador to Venezuela. The two share their homes with three black and white cats adopted from an animal shelter in Virginia .
If there’s anyone who brings a message of hope and encouragement for the people of Bohol , I say it’s US Ambassador Kristie A. Kenney.

Going Green is an investment for the future. Reading the kit, there are straight forwarded advices that do not require expensive investment in technology. Rather, it gives practical tips for us to protect our environment:
·         Save water. Save energy.
·         Respect wildlife. Paradise is their home. We are the visitors.
·         Marine protected areas are like money in the bank. Support MPAs.
·         The sea is not a garbage can.
·         Corals are fragile. No corals. No fish.
Remember, every interaction between man and nature will always have an impact on the environment. We are part of the magic web of life…

A news headline (well, among others, that’s for sure) in last Sunday’s (Sept. 9, 2007) Bohol Chronicle issue caught my critical eye: “US envoy impresses Boholanos”.

But why on earth would US Ambassador Kristie Kenney impress ‘Boholanos’?

Thank goodness  I have some real friends at times in the media circle, some had asked me why I was not present during the visitation of my ambassador keeney?
Even my editor was not informed about it as he was in Cebu at the time of her visit.
Governor also noticed I was not present and I am present at most events that do go on for media.
I let people know that my feelings had been sensitive about the matter but they told it was a short notice as well for most of them, even governor told me that he would make sure that if she ever came back here he would let me know right  away as he appeared sad as to why I also was not there.
I am honest guys and when having a friend it is one of the most important factors to keeping a friendship going smoothly. I admit I say things that are straight out of mouth and I do not seem anything as close to inhibited as some are around here due to the culture thing here. Let me mind you its better to be heard then not heard as in life we learn dearly from those who can say it the way it is. For example if I have a kugmo hanging outside my nostrills would you tell me about it or would you not give a rip and let me go on greeting people with it waving at everyone making their stomachs turn green as they see it on me or would you be polite and descent to inform me hey you have a boog...... hanging outside your nose! Come on Bohol people be real be yourselves and get out of the shell and wake up and smell life as it should be as fun and enjoyable as heck should be!!!
