Two Bohol Islets Shattered by Twister

Tornados or “twisters” of unknown origin separately shattered two islets of Butan and Gaos, off Pres. Carlos P. Garcia island town, left some 100 houses in ruins, said Vice-Mayor Nestor Abad in an interview.

This came on the same day of November 19, 2007 that at least one person has died and millions of pesos worth of seaweed farms in Bien-Unido went to waste in the aftermath of typhoon ‘Lando’ last week.

Abad said that initial findings of the Municipal Disaster Coordinating Council (MDCC) that conducted ocular inspection bared that some 50 houses in Butan and another 50 houses in Gaos were damaged. But there were no injuries nor casualties wrought by the tornados in the evening of November 19, 2007.

The extent of the damage was not yet available as of presstime, Abad said.

He said that MDCC is contemplating to use the calamity fund to help the affected families. But he has yet to inform Mayor Tesalonica Boyboy, who was out of town when contacted for comment. The vice-mayor said most of the families depend largely on fishing as their source of livelihood.

Abad added that the town officials are also working to get ready for the predicted super tyhoon “Mina” that is expected to hit in Bicol region and some eastern Visayas provinces and even if Bohol was not on the list of typhoon paths.

This came despite exclusion of the province of Bohol from pathway of “Lando” by the Philippine Atmosphere Geo-sciences Astronomical S Administration (Pag-asa).

In an islet of Mawmawan, off Bien-Unido town, Lalaine Abrasada, 13, was hit by a falling G-melina tree (that destroyed the house) while she was sleeping in the afternoon of Nov. 19 as confirmed by Mayor Nino Rey Boniel in an interview yesterday.

Officials here said that more than 1,000 hectares of seaweeds farms off island-barangays of Bilangbilangan and Hingutanan were partly devastated by ‘Lando.’ But Boniel said there was not yet estimate of the damage of the multi-million dollar seaweed farms.

Boniel minced no words of assailing Pag-asa’s failure of providing almost-accurate forecasting since they thought “Lando” would not hit the town. But when it reached the town, it was no ordinary wind blow but really a storm that caught everybody flat-footed, he said.

The mayor said that he will utilize the 30% of the calamity fund of his town for rehabilitation and preparation for up-coming super-typhoon “Mina.” He also alerted the residents in or near the coastal areas.

Sketchy reports bared that a landslide occurred in barangay Lusong, Buenavista town along the national highway but no one was injured nor casualty. Also, a river in San Miguel town overflowed and some farms of barangays Poblacion and Bayongan were adversely affected, the report said.

In an interview yesterday, P02 Jodel Torregosa of PNP Buenavista said PNP received no information on the reported landslide. This writer tried but failed to contact Mayor Elsa Tirol for comment. She led a medical mission held in one of the barangays yesterday, Torregosa said. (Ric Obedencio)
