The Bohol ChronicleTagbilaran City residents expressed alarm on the impending serious problem of the city’s drainage system even as the multi-million drainage project will soon be completed.
Water discharged at the new drainage system includes wastes from the more than 30 establishments and homes which authorities failed to unplug while the project was still in progress. This is adding volume and pollutants to what was originally designed to accommodate rain water to the drainage system along CPG Avenue.
Residents in low-lying areas are complaining on the frequent flooding brought about by heavy rains.
Just a few minutes of downpour would submerge some areas of CPG North Avenue and Peñaflor St. by as much as 3-feet of water.
Complaints were aired over Station dyRD by residents who observed the foul odor of the water that overflows from the city’s drainage.
Atty. Rene Paredes said in an interview over dyRD said that Peñaflor residents fear for their safety every time it rains since water flood into their homes.
Another resident, Dr. Dulce Camacho, bared that even students of Bohol Wisdom School could hardly get off their vehicles when the water reach almost waist-deep.
Camacho said they have been complaining on the matter for almost a year now but the City Engineers Office has not done anything about it.
Since the concreting of CPG Avenue, flooding at Penaflor Street has worsened, Camacho added.
A small canal that had been excavated by the City Engineers Office could not hold the water coming from the drainage system, according to Camacho.
The unfinished excavation works at the drainage outflow along San Jose Street has caused the frequent spill over of polluted water, explained Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) district engineer Celestino Adlaon.
According to Adlaon, the elevation of CPG Avenue causes water to settle in low-lying areas especially that the outfall is not yet completed.
