"Medyo mabagal ito, pabago-bago ang direksyon ng bagyong ito. Dati southeast, tapos east, ngayon north-northeast (Maring is moving very slowly, and keeps changing direction. It was moving southeast, then east, then north-northeast)," Mendoza said in an interview on dzBB radio.

When asked when Maring will exit the Philippine area of responsibility, Mendoza said their models show it may do so on August 22, Thursday.

However, he said there is also a chance Maring may exit the PAR on Friday.

Mendoza said their models show Maring appears headed for the southern islands of Japan but may change direction until it heads for Taiwan. -- http://www.gmanetwork.com/

Na, hasta flood picture nabahaan. Baha sa Manila eh,

Malacañang suspends classes, gov’t in Metro Manila, 12 provinces

MANILA, Philippines—Malacañang on Monday announced the suspension of classes and work in government offices except those involved in disaster risk reduction and management in Metro Manila and 12 Luzon provinces following the incessant torrential rains since Sunday night.

Besides Metro Manila, Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa Jr. ordered the suspension of classes in all levels in Pangasinan, Benguet, Bataan, Zambales, Tarlac, Pampanga, Bulacan, Rizal, Laguna, Cavite, Batangas and Occidental Mindoro.

Manuel Quezon III, undersecretary of Presidential Communications Development and Strategic Planning, also posted in his Twitter account earlyMonday the suspension of classes and work in government offices in the affected areas.

Presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said that the suspension of classes and work was recommended by the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) as tropical storm Maring continued to pummel Metro Manila and the  12 provinces.

The state weather bureau earlier re-issued the red rainfall alert in Metro Manila and the affected provinces in Luzon, expecting severe flooding due to heavy to intense rains.

Several schools in Metro Manila and some provinces as early as Sunday announced the suspension of classes due to the rains.

this is real time... not a speck of rain now, though it's pretty obvious that the skies are very dark and the rains could come back any minute now.  the irony: from our window, i can see a building is on fire about half a kilometer away, somewhere in the direction of baclaran.  i wish the rains would fall again now if only for that big fire.

so this was it, that strange fire i saw from our window in the middle of incessant rains...

Warehouse fire in Pasay out after 2 days

By Jamie Elona
INQUIRER.net
Thursday, August 22nd, 2013

MANILA, Philippines—Firefighters put out the fire that hit a warehouse in Pasay City for almost two days, a city fire officer said Thursday.

Fire Officer 3 Luisito de Guzman said the fire at the four-story warehouse in Russel Street, Barangay (village) 76 was put out at around 7:15 a.m. roughly two days since it started around 3 p.m. last Tuesday.

The fire reached Task Force Bravo.

He said arson investigators have yet to determine the cause and origin of the fire, as well as the cost of damages it made.

“Arson investigators are still at the crime scene for post fire investigation,” de Guzman said.

Senior Police Officer 2 Bernardo Bermejo of Pasay Fire said they had a hard time putting out the fire as the stored goods were mostly rubber slippers and shoes.

Portions of the structure also collapsed, he said.

Fire trucks from nearby cities had also responded.

No one was reported hurt, De Guzman added.

New LPA may intensify into a storm - Pagasa
By: Jaime Sinapit, InterAksyon.com
August 24, 2013 9:50 AM

State weather bureau Pagasa on Saturday said the Low Pressure Area (LPA) spotted east of Mindanao may intensify into a storm anytime between Saturday evening and Monday.

"It may strengthen into a storm as it's still out at sea," where it can gain energy, said forecaster Aldzcar Aurelio. For the moment, however, the LPA is still not affecting the Philippines.

If the LPA becomes a storm it will be named "Nando".

As of 4 a.m. Saturday, the LPA was around 630 kilometers east of Davao City.

Eastern Visayas and the provinces of Surigao were forecast to have cloudy skies with moderate to ocassionally heavy rainshowers and thunderstorms on Saturday. Authorities warned that oncoming rains may trigger flashfloods and landslides.

MIMAROPA and the rest of Visayas and of Mindanao will have cloudy skies with light to moderate rainshowers and thunderstorms. Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon will be partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms.

Moderate to strong winds blowing from the southwest to south will prevail over Luzon and its coastal waters will be moderate to rough. Elsewhere, winds will be light to moderate coming from the southwest to west with slight to moderate seas.

Meanwhile, the lingering southwest monsoon will continue to affect the western section of Luzon, Pagasa said.

Flashfloods, landslides may hit Visayas, Mindanao
By Jaime Laude (The Philippine Star) | Updated August 25, 2013 - 12:00am

MANILA, Philippines - Possible flash floods and landslides may threaten parts of Visayas and Mindanao due to the low pressure area (LPA) hovering near Surigao province, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said yesterday.

The NDRRMC issued the warning as the state weather bureau said the LPA has an equal chance of developing into a tropical depression in the next 24 hours.

If it becomes a tropical depression, it would be locally called “Nando,” said Alvin Pura, weather forecaster of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

As of 5 p.m. yesterday, the LPA was spotted 330 kilometers east of Surigao City. It is said to be embedded along the monsoon trough and would affect Southern Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.

NDRRMC spokesman Maj. Rey Balido said the LPA is expected to bring moderate to occasionally heavy rains and thunderstorms over Visayas and regions of Northern Mindanao that may trigger flashfloods and landslides.

“Residents (there) are advised to take all the necessary precautionary measures,” Balido said.

The Department of Health (DOH), for its part, issued an alert for people with leptospirosis.

“Symptoms of leptospirosis are expected to start coming out this weekend so we’re also expecting to see people coming to hospitals. We don’t want them to ignore leptospirosis,” DOH Assistant Secretary Eric Tayag said.

Tayag warned leptospirosis could lead to renal failure, which can be reversed if treated immediately and properly. Otherwise, the illness could become fatal.

Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease that can be acquired by getting in contact with water or soil contaminated with the urine of infected animals, particularly rats.

In the early stages, it could be characterized by high fever, severe headache, muscle pain, redness of the eyes, chills, jaundice or yellowish skin, abdominal pain, hemorrhage in the skin and mucous membranes, diarrhea, vomiting and rash. – With Evelyn Macairan, Sheila Crisostomo

Ang LPA sa east of Mindanao has i tensified intto a Tropical Depression and was named NANDO.
