DRIED MAHOGANY FRUITS ARE ALTERNATIVE FOR FUEL

MAHOGANY FRUITS are often thrown away. What most people do not know is that the dried pulps are good substitute of charcoal and firewood.

â€œFour dried pulps are enough to boil a liter of water,â€ says, Maregien Abrasaldo, science teacher of Aplaya Elementary School in Digos City.
â€œTo have a good burning effect, the pulps should be dried for one day. If used in clay stove , the pulps should be chopped into smaller pieces, like charcoal.â€

Abrasaldo has taken her own advise and it has serve her well for she has reduced her LPG usage by 50%.

Her co- teachers have also tried using dried mahogany fruits as fuel, After all, mahoganies abound in the school because since 1990, graduating pupils are required to plant trees.

Known as a hard wood, mahogany is a fast-growing forest trees commonly made into furniture or used in construction materials. More importantly, mahoganies effectively prevent soil erosion and flood hence these are often planted along river banks. Mahogany trees do not bear flower but grow buds which develop into brown oblong fruit. The fruits fall when they mature, and the dried ones break spreading on the ground.

Pupils of Aplaya are asked to collect fallen fruits for fuel and seeds for schoolâ€™s plant nursery . The school has to grow more mahoganies as it has partnered with the local government, Department of Education, and a group of environmentalist in a project to conserve and prevent soil erosion along the banks of Digos River.

Misud na sa PAR ang bagjong Chedeng (Severe Tropical Storm Sangdo). 880 kms east of Guian, Eastern Samar ang nahimutangan ni Chedeng. May gikusgon nga 120 kph ang mao nga bagjo.

Mao ni ang satellite image ni Chedeng as of 10:00 am karon. Ang gilajuon ni Chedeng gibanabana ng 640 kilometers east of Borngan, Eastern Samar.

Base sa forecast model sa PAG-ASA gibana bana nga si Chedeng motugpa sa extreme Northern Luzon provicne of Cagayan karong Miyerkules, Mayo 25, 2011 sa gabii.

Ondoy-like typhoon could miss Metro Manila, devastate Bicol

MANILA, Philippines - President Benigno â€œNoynoyâ€ Aquino III ordered government agencies to ensure that there will be zero casualty once tropical storm Chedeng packs enough energy to wallop the country.

Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Undersecretary Graciano Yumul told a press conference in MalacaÃ±ang that the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, Astronomical, and Services Administration (PAGASA) is giving â€œevery hour, on the hour updatesâ€ on the track of the storm that is expected to turn into a â€œtyphoonâ€ in the coming days.

â€œThere are 3 components of a good forecast, however. One, it should be timely and reliable; two, there should be good communication; and three, an appropriate response by the community should be attained,â€ he said.

He noted that the last typhoon, Bebeng, destroyed billions of properties and claimed the lives of more than 30 not because of laxity on the part of the government but because of a slew of factors.

â€œNapakahirap tumawag ng mga kasama. When we had our press conference on a weekend, only 4 to 5 appearedâ€¦Itâ€™s also hard to announce the movement of the typhoon that time because some LGUs were awaiting Manny Pacquiaoâ€™s fight,â€ he said.

Yumul said â€œpreparationâ€ is paramount. â€œOneâ€™s safety is also oneâ€™s responsibility,â€ he said.

Like Ondoy

Based on the 11:00 a.m. report of the PAGASA, the tropical storm was seen 490 kilometers East of Borongan, Eastern Samar. Moving west northwest at 13 kph, the storm had maximum sustained winds of 105 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 135 kph.

Storm signal 1 has been raised over Catanduanes, Camarines Sur, Albay, Sorsogon and the Samar Provinces.

Chedeng is estimated to bring rains measuring between 20 to 40 millimeters of rain, which is already â€œheavyâ€ by definition. Add to this the interaction with the southwest monsoon, Chedeng could bring Ondoy-like rains, Yumul said.

â€œAll the ingredients of the southwest monsoon are already there: the cloud formation and the pressure condition. Weâ€™re only now tracking the rain, which Chedeng will bring,â€ he said.

Ondoy-like destruction will be felt more in the western seaboard, including Samar and Bicol as well as Cagayan and Isabela, he said.

â€œAll our model systems show Chedeng will not hit Manila, but it will track the same route as Bebeng 3 weeks ago,â€ he said.

Metro Manila will only be â€œextremely wetâ€ starting Friday until Sunday, he added.

â€˜Chedengâ€™ spares PH, veers toward Japan

MANILA, Philippinesâ€”Typhoon â€œChedengâ€ swirled north toward Japan on Thursday, sparing the Philippines from a direct hit.

At least one fatality was reported from the typhoonâ€”Jaime Torillos, 75, who went out to sea to fish in spite of the bad weather on Wednesday, police said. His body was retrieved off Barangay Biong in Gigmoto, Catanduanes province.

Thousands of residents who fled to evacuation centers in the Bicol region returned Thursday to their homes after the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) lowered storm warnings.

â€œBy the end of the day, they will have all left for home,â€ said Bernardo Alejandro, the regional civil defense chief.

Robert Sawi, Pagasa chief forecaster, said a high-pressure ridge dissipated, allowing the typhoon to veer away from the country and head toward Japan.

As of 4 p.m. on Thursday, Chedeng was seen 300 kilometers east of Casiguran, Aurora province, or 200 km east of Aparri, Cagayan province. The typhoon packed more wallop as it moved northwest at 19 kph with peak winds of 175 kph gusting up to 210 kph.

Pagasa said, however, that rains spawned by the typhoonâ€”the second of the seasonâ€”and the activation of the southwest monsoon were likely to continue until Saturday.

At least 10 flights to and from Samar province and the Bicol region were canceled Thursday.

A total of 5,719 passengers remained stranded for a second day in various ports in Bicol, the Coast Guard reported.

By Thursday noon, Albay Gov. Joey Salceda ordered evacuees to go home, except those living in low-lying areas.

At least 40,000 families had been told to evacuate as a precautionary measure, but the governor said about 16,621 families would remain in evacuation centers in the towns of Libon, Polangui, Oas, Guinobatan and Jovellar.

Salceda also warned against sea travel because of big waves and storm surges.

The departure of Chedeng was welcomed in Ilagan, Isabela, although Gov. Faustino Dy III directed rescue workers and road repair crews to stay at their posts.

Villagers who reside near riverbanks also were told to remain in evacuation centers.

The town resumed preparations for its annual Mammangi Festival and motor racing competitions as the weather improved.

Sa pagkagahapon, si Tropical Storm Egay nakagawas na sa Pilipinas. Karong adlawa downgraded na sija ug balik into a tropical depression. Usa ang kumpirmadong patay human maanod sa usa ka suba sa probinsiya sa Bataan. Duha pa ang gipangita nga naanod pud sa Bataan ug Zambales.

Ug gahapon pud, nakasud na ang LPA 99W nga dako ang chance nga mahimong bagjo karong adlawa. Kung mahimong bagjo, tawgon ni ug Falcon. Pero matud pa sa PAG-ASA weather bulletin, murag dako ang chance nga dili ni makatugdang sa juta pero magda gihapon ug kusog nga uwan tungod sa pagpakusog niini sa habagat.

Visayas braces for 'Falcon'

MANILA, Philippines - Tropical depression â€œFalcon,â€ which developed yesterday afternoon, is seen to bring more rains this week but is not expected to become a storm within the next 24 hours, the weather bureau said.

As of 2 p.m. yesterday, the center of Falcon was located 610 kilometers east-northeast of Borongan, Eastern Samar with maximum sustained winds of 55 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center.

It was forecast to move west northwest at 19 kph.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has not raised a storm signal as of yesterday afternoon.

â€œWe do not expect (Falcon) to become a storm within the next 24 hours. It will not also make landfall based on the latest model,â€ PAGASA supervising undersecretary Graciano Yumul said.

Falcon is the sixth tropical cyclone to enter the country this year and the third weather disturbance this month.

It is expected to be 440 kilometers east of Virac, Catanduanes this morning; 420 kms east northeast of Casiguran, Aurora tomorrow morning; and 350 kms east of Basco, Batanes by Friday morning.

PAGASA said Falcon and tropical cyclone â€œEgay,â€ which is already out of the country, are expected to bring widespread rains over the western section of Luzon.

50,000 flee storm in Philippines

MANILA (AFP) â€“ Some 50,000 people were in evacuation centres in the Philippines on Friday after fleeing their homes following days of torrential rains caused by Tropical Storm Meari, officials said.

More than 3,200 people fled their homes overnight in the capital Manila alone as the storm added to seasonal monsoon rains, bringing massive flooding to city streets, the civil defence agency said.

The swift evacuation of Manila residents as the waters rose overnight prevented any deaths, said Benito Ramos, executive director of the official National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.

"It is a good thing we pre-positioned rubber boats. Thankfully, people reacted well. When we told them to evacuate, they evacuated," Ramos said.

However 11 people were still missing in or near the less-developed Bicol peninsula southeast of Manila that bore the brunt of Meari as it brushed past the eastern side of this country, the council added.

The missing included 10 fishermen who ventured out to sea from the island of Catanduanes before Meari struck and a woman swept away by flash flooding in another part of Bicol, a council said.

The rains, which have been falling for most of the week, intensified on Thursday, forcing people to flee their homes, fearing floods and landslides.

Most schools in and around Manila cancelled classes on Friday due to the flooding with debris blocking many streets, authorities said.

Science Department Undersecretary Graciano Yumul said that rain would further intensify over the main island of Luzon where Manila is located, even though the storm was moving away from the Philippines towards Taiwan.

The government weather station reported that Meari had strengthened as it moved northwest towards Taiwan, with gusts of 100 kilometres (60 miles) per hour. --http://news.yahoo.com/

Sa kalooy sa panahon, ang low pressure area nga diha ra sa sidlakan sa Bicol Region nahimo na intawong Bagjo ug gipanganlan ug Tropical Depression Hanna (Tokage). Kini gina bana bana nga modagan padung sa nahamutangan ni Hurricane Ma-on nga padung karon sa Japan. Dug-ol ra ni sila mao nga nahigop ang hinay nga si Hanna ni Ma-on. Murag wa ni epekto sa ato kay pagawas naman si Hanna ugma sa kaadlawon.

As of 11:00 a.m today, July 27, 2011, nakatugpa na intawon sa juta ang bagjong Juaning. Sa may Aurora Province area ug gipangagpas nga molahos didto sa Pangasinan. Usa mitugpa, si Juaning mikusog from a Tropical Storm ngadto sa Category 1 nga Tropical Cyclone. Buot ipasabot nga naa sijay kakusgon nga 120 kph. Kusog ning bagjoha.

Taiwan issued sea and land warnings and planned to evacuate about 3,700 people in its eastern and southern regions as it braced for the typhoon. Troops and rescue equipment have been deployed in advance for any contingency, Taiwan's Defense Ministry said.

With its enormous cloud band, the typhoon drenched northern provinces with rains for days before pummeling them with fierce winds, setting off landslides and floods and knocking down walls that left at least eight people dead and six more missing, said Benito Ramos, who heads the Office of Civil Defense.

Strong winds knocked down a concrete wall, which hit a small eatery in the capital's suburban Quezon City Sunday, killing a man and injuring two others in the latest casualties of the typhoon, police said.

In the northern mountain resort city of Baguio, a garbage dump's concrete wall collapsed and buried three shanties under tons of garbage Saturday, killing two children. Their grandmother remained missing, Ramos said.

Five others perished in landslides or drowned, including a fisherman, whose body was found floating Saturday off eastern Catanduanes province after he went missing late last week. A decision by many villagers to flee to safety before the typhoon struck and vigilance helped reduced the number of casualties, Ramos said.

A bus driver ordered his 18 passengers to rapidly alight after sensing the soggy mountain road they were on was about to collapse late Saturday in northern Benguet province. After they ran to safety, the road collapsed with the bus down a deep ravine, said regional disaster-response official Olive Luces said.

"The driver's presence of mind prevented a disaster," Luces said.

About 20 landslides cut off access to a number of Benguet towns, she said.

U.S. officials postponed a Manila visit by the U.S. Navy's John C. Stennis Carrier Strike Group, originally scheduled for this weekend, due to the bad weather.

The U.S. Embassy said all tours of the aircraft carrier, as well as the reception on board, had been canceled.

Domestic airlines also canceled more than a dozen flights to areas affected by the typhoon in the northern and central Philippines.

Nanmadol had sustained wind of 121 miles (195 kilometers) per hour and gusts of 143 mph (230 kph) Friday, becoming the strongest typhoon to hit the Philippines so far this year. It weakened after grazing northern Cagayan province Saturday. It would skirt the northernmost Batanes islands with 75 mph (120 kph) winds Sunday before starting to blow away from the country, Philippine government forecasters said.

Sa pagkakaron, ika-17 sa Mayo, 2012, duha ka LPA (Low Pressure Area ang naglibot sa Pilipinas pero dili ni makaapektar jud ug direkta.

Ang LPA 92W (10% chance of becoming a tropical cyclone) padung na sa Vietnam unja padung na sa pagkabungkag.

Ang LPA 90W (nabungkag na) padung sa Taiwan Strait kay gihigop sa usa ka Stationary Front didto. Kini gibana bana nga magda ug uwan sa Northern ug Central Luzon areas.

Duha ka Low Pressure Areas ang gibantajan karon sa PAG-ASA.

1. LPA 93W nga naa sa sud sa ITCZ nga nakaapekto karon sa tibuok Mindanao. Pero kaning LPA naa ray 20% chance of forming into a tropical cyclone within 24 hours mao nga murag gahi ni mahimong bagjo.

2. LPA 94W nga tua karon sa tunga tunga sa mga isla sa Chuuk (Federated States of Micronesia) ug Guam (USA). Kaning mao nga LPA dunay dako nga chance nga mahimong bagjo.
