from the Philippine News Agency (PNA)The National Food Authority (NFA) has assured the people of stable rice supply in Central Visayas with the recent arrival of imported supplies from Vietnam and Thailand.
Edgar C. Diez, acting NFA public information officer, said the 1.78 million bags of rice that arrived from Vietnam recently only make up 48 percent of the 3.74 million bags that the region has targeted to import this year.
Central Visayas consumes around 8.74 million bags of rice each year, with Cebu eating up 5.10 million bags or the bulk of the rice supply in the region;
followed by Bohol, 2.17 million bags; Negros Oriental, 1.39 million bags; and Siquijor, 81,360 bags.
Among the four provinces, only Bohol is self-sufficient in rice while Siquijor has abundant corn to cover any rice shortage.
But Cebu and Negros oriental have always depended on rice imports to meet the demand, Diez said.
The recent rice imports from Thailand and Vietnam have started arriving here in March aboard 16 vessels. They are now being stored inside NFA warehouses in Cebu City and at the Cebu International Port (CIP).
Aside from imports, the region also sources its rice requirements from Mindanao, Iloilo and Luzon. (PNA)
