Press Release: The Bureau of Customs (BOC) Bureau’s Action Team Against Smugglers (BATAS) filed on March 26, 2021 before the Department of Justice (DOJ) smuggling charges against SPI Semicon Asia Inc. due to alleged misdeclaration.
SPI Semicon Asia Inc. and its customs broker were charged for alleged misdeclaration and illegal importation of three 40-footer containers of various general merchandise amounting to P7,208,666.14, including duties and taxes.
The respondents purportedly violated pertinent provisions of the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act (CMTA), Republic Act 9175 otherwise known as the Chain Saw Act of 2002 in relation to DENR Administrative Order (DAO) 2003-24, and Article 172 in relation to Article 171 of the Revised Penal Code (RPC).
The violation was committed on 16 January 2021 in Manila International Container Port (MICP).
The BOC remains committed to protecting the interest of the general public by curbing all forms of smuggling and customs fraud through the consistent filing of both criminal and administrative cases against unscrupulous importers, customs brokers, and even corrupt customs officials and personnel.
