Sinkholes in Tagbilaran City
« on: June 14, 2010, 05:58:38 AM »
Seven barangays in Tagbilaran City will have to brace for any impact of pocket sinkholes discovered by a team of geologists from the Central Visayas regional office of the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).

Pockets of sinkholes were found in Poblacion 3, Bool, Mansasa, Cabawan, Tiptip, Dao and Cogon during a recent round of geo-hazard assessment of the MGB-7 team.

According to regional officials of DENR-7, Dao and Bool showed to be at the highest risks with the presence of huge structures like malls, recreation centers, residential areas and dumpsite.

The Provincial Disaster Coordinating Council urged its barangay point persons in these areas to take charge in gathering data to be incorporated in the consolidated Search and Rescue Plan of the local government units in the province.

The concerns on sinkholes pose as a new challenge to the PDCC since the previous risk mapping and assessment in the preparatory stage for the operation of the consolidated search and rescue teams focused only on areas prone to flooding, landslides and other calamities and the populace that may be affected.

The consolidated Search and Rescue Plan of the LGUs may be expanded to cover those that would address the impact of sinkholes.

Earlier news reports had quoted the chief geologist of MGB-7 with a suggestion that "the only way to detect if an area is susceptible to sinkhole formation is through core drilling or ground-penetrating radar". - Bohol Chronicle
