Manila Bulletin – 6 hours ago

Cebu City – About 4,000 passengers were stranded in various ports in Cebu, Bohol and Camotes Island as of noon time yesterday after the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) prevented vessels from sailing due to tropical storm Seniang.

The order to cancel boat trips from Cebu and Bohol were issued as public storm signal number 1 and number 2 were hoisted over the provinces of Cebu and Bohol, respectively. Signal number 2 was also raised in the Siquijor province.

“We were unaware of the incoming typhoon and the cancellation of trips,” said Victor Abella, whose family was set to travel to Leyte to celebrate the New Year with relatives.

Abella said his family will have to spend time in Pier 1 until the PCG allows the resumption of sea travel. The Abella family came from Samboan town, some 120 kilometers away from Cebu City.

Large vessels and fast ferries which cancelled trips include MV Ocean Jet 8 from Pier 1 in Cebu City to Ormoc City in Leyte, MV Weesam 7 from Pier 1 to Ormoc, MV Filipinas Dapitan from Pier 1 to Calbayog in Samar, MV Filipinas Dinagat from Pier 1 to Dumaguete City in Negros Oriental, and MV Filipinas Ozamiz from Pier 1 to Tagbilaran in Bohol.

In Bohol, several trips were cancelled, including MV Oceanjet 888 from Tagbilaran to Cebu City, MV Lite Ferry 10 from Tagbilaran to Cebu City, LCLT Brendan from Tagbilaran to Mandaue city, MV Lite Jet 1 from Tubigon to Cebu City, and MV Lite Ferry 12 from Tubigon to Cebu City.

Also cancelled were trips of MV Starcraft 2 from Tubigon to Cebu City, MV Starcraft 6 from Tubigon to Cebu City, MV Starcraft 9 from Tubigon to Cebu City, MV J&N Carrier from Ubay, Bohol to Cebu City, MV Lady of Guadalupe Cebu from Ubay, Bohol to Bato, Leyte.

The Cebu province and city disaster risk reduction management offices have been on alert as of yesterday morning due to continuous rainfall that could trigger landslide and flashfloods in eas.

Cebu’s Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office Information Officer Julius Regner said PDRRMO personnel are on standby for monitoring and sending out advisories to local government units (LGUs) and directed to activate disaster response measures.

Families living in low-lying and landslide-prone areas have also been advised to take precautionary measures, he said.

The Office of the Civil Defense in Central Visayas (OCD-7) has also activated its personnel to monitor geo-hazard areas in the region as Seniang made landfall yesterday.
