Robbery Suspect in Bohol Arrested in Gingoog
« on: September 08, 2010, 10:29:36 AM »
Bohol Chronicle

Police operatives in Gingoog City, through a warrant of arrest, apprehended the prime suspect in the 2007 highway robbery that victimized foreign nationals along the highway in a remote barangay in Sierra Bollunes town.

The suspect was identified as certain Matias Bactasa Jr., 22 years old and a resident of barangay Aurora, Pilar town.

It may be recalled that a group of teachers and students were then having their educational tour in the province on that year, and upon reaching Brgy Nan-od of the said town, their coaster was stopped by robbery group and who then declared a hold-up.

Bactasa, upon learning that a pending arrest warrant was to be issued against him, migrated to Mindanao.

According to the primary investigation of the Intelligence Section based in Camp Dagohoy, Bactasa was temporarily residing in barangay Talisay, Gingoog City where he was arrested. He unwittingly gave himself away.

PO2 Max Macua of Intel Section revealed to the Chronicle that Bactasa reportedly narrated to some residents in the barangay that he killed a police officer in Bohol. The bystanders reported it to the Gingoog police and the operatives verified Bactasa's status in Bohol in coordination with the Intelligence and Investigation section at Camp Dagohoy.

PO2 Macua further revealed that Bactasa has already been in the watch list some three years ago.

Bactasa was positively identified by SPO2 Jorgie Sarabosing, the police
escort of the Japanese nationals. According to SPO2 Sarabosing, it was only Bactasa, among the suspects who was not wearing a bonnet

The suspect is now detained at the Sierra Bullones locked up jail. Bailbond is placed at P100,000.

Meanwhile, cases on carnapping, robbery, illegal possession of fire arms and illegal use of drugs were filed by the police against the five suspects who were captured by SWAT operatives in barangay Catagbacan, Loon town last week.

The accused are Ryme Eyo, Tiboy Montesino, Ruben Lange, Carlito Agot Jr, Victoriano Castrojo.

Torregosa and Nuez were included in the charge sheet.

The five are detained at the Camp Dagohoy stockade. (Anthony Aniscal)

The reality on the news event covering this back in 2007 I was given complaint and court documents to write about this incident in 2007. Chronicle and Sunday Post refused to publish the news that happened to these Japanese tourist.

The person handing me these documents was the Sr. writer at a major newspaper here and according to him his publisher did not want to print any news that was negative here regarding foreigners.

I was the only one in print media to take up the initiative to make a front page news item out of this in front page in Bantay Balita whose publisher was a Japanese. The second write up on this was in my old column in Bohol Standard "precious thoughts".

This maybe be the point in why there was not much excitement from the public when these men were captured do to the fact not enough people were informed about the incident.

Their capture was a relief to the victims, lock them up and throw the key away.

In what way do you mean misinformed?

You mean my newsprint write up was wrong?

I used documents and reports by the victims themselves....

It was being covered up as to not scare tourist into coming to Bohol.

Any type of news such as this should be told to the public to let them be cautious that there are bad things happening and to take better care.
