The body of a Filipino seaman who died in Japan arrived today, March 14 at 9:30am via PAL.

His parents Nong BOy and Nang Christie with children and cousins were there at the aiport to meet the young Mercader.

The remains were brought to the Holy Name Funeral Homes. A mass was held before the coffin was opened. As of press time, the body was inside a steel coffin and was frozen.

Alexander Chatto Mercader

Booy seaman
dies in Japan
1 of 5 Pinoy casualties in 3-ship collision

HE HAS BIG DREAMS for his family. One of them was to be home in one piece later this month. But it was not destined to be that way. Indeed, he will be home, this time, inside a sealed crate. He is dead.

The death of Alexander Mercader, 33, of Booy district, this city, happened Wednesday night when the vessel he was on board collided with two other ships in the seawaters off Kobe, Japan.

Another vessel and a tanker completed the three-ship smash up claiming the lives of two Filipinos. The three others who are also Filipinos are still missing and given up for dead.

It will be a tearful reunion for the Mercader family when they welcome their seaman-son in a coffin.

Had it not of the tragedy, Mercader would have arrived in the Philippines later this month after a year of toiling in the Belize-registered Gold Leader cargo vessel that accidentally collided with two other ships about 2.5 kilometers (1.5 miles) southeast of Akashi Bridge in the Akashi Straits, Kobe, in Japan.

For 19 hours, Mercader was floating in icy waters after the collision. He died of exhaustion.
His mother, Justina told The Post last Friday that she spoke with her son on March 10 about his coming home. She could not believe that their conversation would be the last. "He told me that he will be home by the end of this month," a sobbing Justina said, her voice breaking.

The news saddened the neighborhood in barangay Booy, this city since Mercader, the eldest in a brood of four had been a good provider for his family. They remembered how the young Mercader was silent and behave when he stayed with his Lolo Bobing and Lola Naning in Caingget.

His aunt, Andresa Mulato in Manila recounted how the young Mercader would talk about his dreams of becoming a seaman and exploring lands outside the Philippines.

"He dreamed of being a seaman. He wanted to see the different places in the world. That's what he said. He really was able to help out his family," said Mulato, who confessed to having treated Mercader like her own son. Mercader's overseas journey was in 2000.

She added that in his nephew's determination to become a seaman, Mercader waited three long years just to have his application approved and get the chance to work overseas.

Aside from Mercader, another Filipino seafarer was found dead by the Japanese coast guard's search and rescue operation, according to The Overseas Workers' Welfare Administration (OWWA) will extend financial assistance to the two Filipino seafarers who died in the ship collision, the Department of Foreign Affairs said.

"[They] are entitled to OWWA benefits and death benefits out of the insurance policy procured by the principal," Claro Cristobal, Foreign Affairs spokesperson assured.

The DFA assured that the Philippine embassy in Tokyo and the Philippine consulate general in Osaka will provide assistance to the Filipino seamen. The Mercader family has sought help from Rep. Edgar Chatto.

The family have to wait for the arrival of Alexander's remains this week.

"We'll wait for Alexander this week," said Justina. The family has already offered prayers when they learned the news last Thursday.

Three other sailors from the Philippines are missing and five others who have been rescued were confined in a hospital.

The missing three were part of a crew of nine aboard the Belize- registered cargo ship Gold Leader.

All nine crew members are Filipinos.

The 1,466-ton Gold Leader sank about 2.5 kilometers east of the Akashi Strait Bridge after being hit by the 2,948-ton tanker, Ocean Phenix following a collision involving the 496-ton vessel Eisei Maru No. 5 around 2:55 p.m., the coast guard said.

The Eisei Maru is a gravel carrier owned by the Eisei marine transport entity based in Himeji, Hyogo, while Ocean Phenix is a tanker operated by Daiichi Marine based in Tokyo.

The three vessels were believed to be heading in westerly direction at the time, the coast guard statement said.

According to Daiichi Marine, the Eisei Maru ran into the stern of Ocean Phenix, causing it to collide with the Gold Leader and resulting in the latter vessel sinking.

The Gold Leader was taking about 1,700 tons of steel products to South Korea from Osaka's Sakai City.

Ocean Phenix carried roughly 1,600 tons of ethylene and was on its way to Hyogo's Takasago city from a port in Ichihara, Chiba Prefecture, east of Tokyo, the coast guard said.

Following the accident, oil leaked from the Gold Leader causing an oil slick more than 3,500 meters long.

Kobe's Local Marine Accident Investigators' Office will dispatch investigators to look into the cause of the accident.

None of the five crew members of the Japanese ship was injured, but the status of the tanker's crew was not yet clear, the coast guard statement said.

The young Mercader is survived by his parents Villardo and Justina and siblings: Ama Victoria, a caregiver in London, Ariel, Adonis, an engineer and Abegail, a nurse.
