Philippines: China executes 3 Filipino drug mules
« on: March 30, 2011, 01:09:08 PM »
MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine government said China executed three Filipinos convicted of drug smuggling Wednesday despite last-minute appeals for clemency and political concessions by the country's leaders.
Sally Ordinario-Villanueva, 32, and Ramon Credo, 42, met their families for the last time early Wednesday before they were put to death by lethal injection in Xiamen, said Philippine Consul Noel Novicio. Elizabeth Batain, 38, was allowed to meet with her relatives hours ahead of her execution in Shenzhen, Novicio said.
The three were not aware they would be executed Wednesday although their sentences were promulgated early in the day, Novicio said. It was the first time that Filipino nationals were executed in China.
China normally does not announce executions. Amnesty International says China is the world's biggest executioner, with thousands of convicts killed every year. The Philippines has abolished the death penalty.
"They already gave us (her) things. It's too much, they gave us only one hour (with her). They have no mercy," Ordinario-Villanueva's sister, Maylene Ordinario, said in a text message from Xiamen to her family in the Philippines.
She said that her sister was blessed by a priest and "she said she wants to be forgiven for all her sins but she insisted that she was a victim."
"She asked us to take care of her children, to take care of each other and to help one another. I have not accepted what will happen. We are forcing ourselves to accept it but I can't," she told Manila radio station DZBB.
The three were arrested separately in 2008 carrying packages containing at least 8 pounds (4 kilograms) of heroin. They were convicted and sentenced in 2009.
In its appeals for clemency, which included three letters by Philippine President Benigno Aquino III to his Chinese counterpart and a February visit to Beijing by the vice president that prompted China to postpone the executions by a month, the government said it was able to prove that a drug syndicate took advantage of the Filipinos. It said that Philippine authorities succeeded in identifying and arresting some members of the syndicate.

Sally to gov't: Please help take care of my kids

MANILA, Philippines - Sally Ordinario Villanueva, one of 3 Filipino drug couriers scheduled for execution in China Wednesday, asked the Philippine government to ensure that her children have an education.

Peter Ordinario, Sally's father, said her daughter wept and hugged the pictures of her two children, Princess May Joy, 12, and Lex Bert, 10, during their brief visit. Sally last saw her children in 2008.

"Huwag pababayaan ang pamilya at bahay niya at hihingi daw po kami ng tulong sa gobyerno ng Pilipinas para sa pag-aaral  ng mga anak niya," Peter told ABS-CBN News.

Peter said Sally cried when she learned that Princess was graduating salutatorian of her grade school graduating class.

He said Sally also asked her mother, Edith, why she had lost so much weight. "Mama, bakit ang payat payat mo na? Wag mo ako isipin dito. Ako andito lang ako. Isipin niyo rin sarili niyo," Sally told her mother.

Sally also told her siblings that she loved them, and that they would be losing a big sister. "Wala na kayong ate," she told younger brother Jason who accompanied Peter and Edith in Xiamen.

'She knew it was time'

Jason said the family only had an hour to talk with Sally. Chinese authorities then gave the Ordinarios Sally's belongings.

He said Sally asked them "Mamamatay na ba ako?" but they refused to answer. He said the whole family was crying, giving Sally a hint of what was about to happen.

Jason said Sally told her to be careful about who to trust. "Wag magtiwala sa mga kaibigan dahil baka sila din ang bumiktima," he recalled Sally as saying.

He said that after their visit, a priest came to anoint Sally.

Peter said Sally kept her spirits up while in prison by helping her fellow inmates. "Marami siyang kaibigan at natuturuan," he said.

He said Sally asked why her husband failed to visit her in Xiamen. It was learned Sally's husband has been missing for the last 3 days.

Drug couriers

Sally is one of 3 Filipinos scheduled for execution in China Wednesday morning. The other 2 are Ramon Credo and Elizabeth Batain.

The Philippine government had insisted that the three, who are among 227 Filipinos jailed in China for drug offenses, were from poor families and had been duped by international crime syndicates into becoming drug couriers.

It had heavily lobbied Chinese authorities to spare the lives of the trio, and Vice President Jejomar Binay was even sent to Beijing last month on a mercy mission.

Chinese authorities briefly postponed the executions due to his visit, but later announced that they would still go ahead.

MANILA, Philippines – The husband of Sally Ordinario-Villanueva has yet to come home in Jones, Isabela province after leaving three days ago.

Hilarion Villanueva told his family that he was going somewhere in Santiago City.

“They were telling us the husband had a job or had to do something in Santiago City. They have yet to receive word on his whereabouts or if he is actually going to come back here to await word on Sally's fate,” said ABS-CBN News correspondent Jeff Canoy who is in Isabela.

Canoy added in his report that Sally’s husband left was emotional and had been drinking more to ease the pain of his wife’s impending fate.

Villanueva left their 2 children in the care of relatives while he is gone.

“When we got there, the media found out that the 2 children were taken away by some other relatives so that they can be protected from the media spotlight,” Canoy said.

Canoy and other mediamen were told that the children where going around Isabela province to visit other relatives.

Jason Ordinario, Sally's brother, said Sally was asking about her husband and why he did not come to Xiamen. "Nag-asawa na ba siya?" asked Sally.

Jason just informed her that Hilarion could not bear to see her and was busy taking care of their 2 kids.

Shortly before noon, Villanueva, along with Ramon Credo and Elizabeth Batain were executed via lethal injection in China.

“We have been informed that Ramon Credo, Sally Villanueva and Elizabeth Batain were administered lethal injections to carry out the death sentence imposed by the courts of the People's Republic of China this morning,” Malacanang said.

Vice-President Jejomar Binay said the Ordinario family positively identified Sally's remains after the execution.

Truly its heart wrenching to hear the intricacies of the events. China's government is heartless for this.

The death penalty should be abolished.

May God, in His infinite mercies, and unmeasurable lovingkindness grant pardon and mercy on the souls of Ramon Credo, Sally Villanueva and Elizabeth Batain. May they be worthy of the promises of Christ.

Amen.

For my opinion, tama ang gibuhat sa governo sa China. This is an example. Aron wala nay mga pushers and drug traffickers. Dili man lang Pinoy ang ilang ge executes, hasta man gani ang mga Chinese, Japanese, Koreans and many other citizens.

RIP.

MANILA, Philippines - There's nothing more the Philippines could have done to safe the lives of 3 Filipinos executed in China for drug trafficking, a senator said on Wednesday.

Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago said the three were bound by Chinese laws when they entered China. "Kung pumasok ka ng isang bansa, ibig sabihin tanggap mo ang mga batas nila," she said in a phone interview. "

Hindi naman puwedeng ikaw na alien, mas maganda pa ang trato sa 'yo ng gobyernong pinuntahan mo."

Santiago believes China did the right thing in enforcing its laws, and that the Philippines has no basis to protest.

"They simply enforced without discrimination a long-standing rule in its jurisdiction. There's no grounds for the Philippines to protest or make a brazen objection," she said. Santiago also said the execution must not strain Chinese-Philippine relations because it was based on "mutual respect" and international laws

The Chinese government is unfair. When recently the Philippines extradited Chinese nationals to China for smuggling charges, the Philippines catered to China's request. And adhering to the One China Policy.  Now when it concerns our own citizens, the Chinese give no credence or respect. They could have granted leniency to show mercy that Government of the People's Republic of China is capable of.

Next time. When the hordes of Chinese illegal fishermen are caught fishing in the protected fishing zones in the Philippines, they, themselves, too, should be subject to high criminal punishment afforded by the Philippine Government. Next time, the Philippine Government shouldn't be so quick to grant leniency and quick to cater to the Chinese Government. As in the form of extraditing Chinese criminals in the Philippines back to China. Let them suffer Philippine Justice.

There is no territorial respect or as Santiago would deem as "mutual respect". If there was 'mutual respect', China would not be contesting territories that are integral to the Philippines such as the Kalayaan Islands in the Spratlys.

It's simple bullying.

Statement of Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda:
On the execution of Ramon Credo, Sally Ordinario-Villanueva, and Elizabeth Batain in Xiamen and Guangzhou, China on March 30, 2011

[Read by the Deputy Spokesperson during a press briefing at Malacñang on March 30, 2011]

We have been informed that Ramon Credo, Sally Ordinario-Villanueva, and Elizabeth Batain were administered lethal injections to carry out the sentence imposed by the courts of the People’s Republic of China this morning. Our government had taken every available opportunity to appeal to the authorities of China for clemency in their cases, to which the Chinese government responded with a postponement of the execution. In the end, however, the sentence was imposed.

The nation sympathized with the families of the condemned, sharing their sense of looming loss. We sympathize with these families now. Their deaths are a vivid lesson in the tragic toll the drug trade takes on entire families.

We are resolved to ensure that the chain of victimization, as pushers entrap and destroy lives in pursuit of their trade, will be broken. Those who traffic in illegal drugs respect no laws, no boundaries, and have no scruples about destroying lives. Our response must be relentless, with government and the citizenry working together to ensure vigilance and mutual support to prevent our countrymen from being used by drug pushers as sacrificial pawns, whether at home or abroad.

Many immigration officers in NAIA are corrupt. they ask money from Filipinos traveling abroad. Most victims are first-time travelers. They will detain you in their office for no reason at all.

Let's hope these Manila immigration officials would go to Jail in China.

Most Boholanos favor death penalty.

This was the news write up in a local paper this weekend.

the very first words upon landing down into the country of PI back in 2007 was that if anyone was caught doing or pushing drugs in this country that it was an automatic death sentence. I think it was abolished since then....
