Filipinos know this all too well: The country’s internet sucks. And a new study shows they’re paying a lot for what researchers call “mediocre” internet services.
The 2022 Digital Quality of Life Index by cybersecurity company SurfShark assessed the digital wellbeing of 117 countries, or 92 percent of the world population. The countries were evaluated based on internet quality and affordability, as well as electronic infrastructure, security, and government.
Overall, the Philippines is in the middle of the pack at 55th place globally and 14th out of 34 countries in Asia. This puts the country a few notches down its previous rankings in 2021. At first place—both in Asia and in the world—is Israel.
According to the study, the Philippines’ internet quality worsened, with a big drop from 20th place in 2021 to 45th in 2022. This was measured considering a number of factors including mobile and broadband speeds, stability, and growth indices.
Despite broadband and mobile internet speeds moderately improving, the country is still lagging behind globally. The Philippines has an average broadband internet speed of 75 Mbps, compared to Singapore which currently has the fastest broadband internet speed of 261 Mbps. It’s also experiencing worse broadband internet stability compared to last year.
Meanwhile, the Philippines has the second least affordable internet in Asia, with Cambodia taking the last spot. The study shows that Filipinos have to work 11 hours and 5 minutes to afford internet, compared to the global average of 6 hours and 31 minutes. In Israel, it only takes 19 minutes of work.
Along with the Philippines, many parts of the world are also seeing less affordable internet this year, according to the study.
