WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 29, 2008  |  YOUTH

CEBU CITY – Local and police authorities here are busy preparing for the arrival of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo Thursday to address the closing ceremony of the 2008 Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) National Congress at the Waterfront Hotel in Lahug.

The President will proceed to the congress site after she inaugurates the Banilad Flyover in Barangay Banilad here.

Scheduled to receive the President upon her arrival at the Waterfront Hotel are acting Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama, Cebu City North District Rep. Raul Del Mar, Cebu City South District Rep. Antonio Cuenco, and SK Federation President and National Youth Council ex-officio Commissioner Jane Censoria Cajes.

The 2008 SK National Congress is one of the most attended gatherings in SK history with over 1,500 delegates from the different provinces, city and municipal federations expected to attend.

Speakers from the academe, business and other prominent groups will discuss a number of subjects affecting the youth during the plenary session of the congress.

Topics to be discussed include the Reproductive Health Bill pending in Congress, SK reforms, Charter Change, and the plight of children in armed-conflict areas.

Spearheaded by the SK president, this year’s congress is supported by the SK National Executive Board.

With the theme “SK: Transform Leadership, Transpire Actions and Transcends Competence,” this year’s congress is aimed at providing a venue for airing SK issues and concerns, interfacing with other members of the SK as an organization, information dissemination of existing policies, programs and projects of the government for the youth, and officially launching the different programs and projects of the SK National Federation.
