BOHOL’S RICHELL ANGALOT, 1ST RUNNER-UP, BINIBINING PILIPINAS 2009
Richell “Rich Asuncion†Pacaldo Angalot of Tagbilaran City, indeed, belongs to this year’s premier crop of beauties of Binibining Pilipinas when she was adjudged first runner-up in last night’s pageant. The 20-year-old talent of GMA-7 was also given the Miss Talent for her “One Night Only†song and dance number, Miss Natasha Beauty and Miss Araneta Center Shoppers’ Choice awards. Rich was trained by Bb. Pilipinas – World 2006 Anna Maris Arcay Igpit from Panglao, Bohol.
Newly-crowned Bb. Pilipinas - International 2009 Melody Gersbach will represent the country to the Miss International tilt in Macau, China and Tokyo, Japan. As Bb. Pilipinas - Universe 2009, Pamela Bianca Manalo will travel to the Fantasy Island in the Bahamas for the Miss Universe pageant, while Bb. Pilipinas - World 2009 winner Marie-Ann Umali will be in South Africa to compete with ladies from other continental beauties for the Miss World crown late this year.
Other winners of the special awards were Pamela Bianca Manalo (Miss Natasha, Best in Swimsuit, Miss Philippine Airlines and Manila Bulletin Readers’ Choice awards), Mary Ann Umali (Miss Photogenic and Best in Long Gown) and Priscilla Mae Honorio (Miss Salsa Jeans). Earlier in the competition, the candidates gave justice to their gowns by Cumbia.
Leading the distinguished panel of judges was Supreme Court Chief Justice Artemio Panganiban, with Brazilian Ambassador Alcides Prades, Pakistani Ambassador Muhammad Naeen Kahn, Gen. Alexander B. Yano, Rizal Gov. Casimiro Ynares III, world-renowned artist Betsy Westendorp, Bernd Schneider, Miss Universe 1969 Gloria Diaz, businessman Arturo Marquez, PBA star Mark Cardona, actor-commercial model-TV host Richard Gomez and singer-actress-TV host Regine Velasquez.
As part of the schedule, Bb. Pilipinas - International 2008 Patricia Fernandez, Bb. Pilipinas - Universe 2008 Jennifer Barrientos and Bb. Pilipinas - World 2008 Danielle Castano led the candidates during the outreach activity at Habitat for Humanity and the Payatas community where they shared food with the destitute children, allowing the ladies to have a feel of being ambassadors of beauty and goodwill.
Not only was the pageant a glamorous showcase of the symbols of charm and pulchritude of the many decades of Binibining Pilipinas, but it was a fitting tribute to the 45 glorious years of the competition, especially former Miss Universe title holders Gloria Diaz and Margarita Moran Floirendo and erstwhile Miss International Aurora Pijuan.
Madam Stella Marquez de Araneta chairs the Binibining Pilipinas executive committee. Together with her are Asia’s fashion czar and symbol of national artistic design Jose ‘Pitoy’ Moreno, Conchitina Sevilla-Bernardo and Manny Atacador. Organized in 1964, the Binibining Pilipinas Charities, Inc. continues to work for the cause of orphan children and the families whose existence are threatened by poverty while it remains to be the hallmark of the best and the beautiful who will bring the country’s name to the international beauty pageant arena.
