After Panglao’s Anna Maris Arcay Igpit got the Binibining Pilipinas – World 2006 crown in February 2006, a Tagbilaranon will try to make Bohol proud again in the most prestigious beauty pageant in the country.
Richelle Pacaldo Asuncion, also known as “Rich Asuncion†of GMA – 7, the daughter of Richard Angalot and Melinda Pacaldo of Bool, Tagbilaran, qualified to be in the 24 official candidates after it was announced to the selected members of the press at the Gateway Cinema, Araneta Center in Quezon City. From the original 170 plus applicants, only 36 were asked to return, until they were trimmed down to the final 24 after undergoing gruelling hours of pressure and tension at the Mandarin Suites last February 5.
The other 23 candidates are Diana Arevalo, Jaysel Arozal, Abegail Lesley Cruz, Mary Jane dela Cruz, Melody Gersbach, Marie Loraine de Guzman, Regina Hahn, Priscila Mae Honorio, Vanessa Johnson, Mary Tifanny Jones, April Love Jordan, Carishiela May Kaujpers, Keann Mallari, Pamela Bianca Manalo, Priscilla Navidad, Cheryl Oliveros, Ma. Paula Bianca Paz, Gizelle Jasmin Rivamonte, Barbara Salvador, Sandras Inez Seifert, Stephanie Sineres, Hazel Sutch, and Marie Ann Umali.
Rich’s baptism of fire in beauty pageants was during the Miss Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association (CVRAA) held in February 2004 in Danao City, Cebu as representative of the Tagbilaran City Schools Division. It was the first time for the city division to participate in the said the regional sports event. She was then a 15-year-old student of Tagbilaran City Science High School when she competed with candidates from the 15 school divisions of Bohol, Cebu, Oriental Negros and Siquijor. She was third runner-up and awarded “Miss Talent†for her monologue. In April 2005, she was crowned as one of Tagbilaran's Five Prettiest. In January 2007, she made her debut on national television via her joining in the GMA-7 talent search which earned her the “First Princess†award of the Starstruck Batch 4 .
At present, Maris Igpit is helping to train and prepare Rich for the pageant. Before the daily rehearsals for Binibining Pilipinas, as GMA-7 contract talent, Rich was busy with the Sunday variety show “SOP,†“Dear Friend†drama anthology and “Magdusa Ka†teleserye, aside from her guest appearances in “Boys Next Door,†“Kung Ako Ikaw,†“Takeshi’s Castle,†“Sis,†“Eat Bulaga,†“Dadedidodu,†“Nuts Entertainment,†“Maynila,†“Mel and Joey,†“Startalk,†“S-Files,†“All-Star K!,†“Sweet Life,†“Moms,†“La Lola,†and “Gagambino.†She has also done endorsements for Boardwalk, Body Works, Flawless, and Ricky Reyes Salon, gone on promotional tours for Boardwalk at Robinson’s and SM Malls nationwide, and graced the covers of magazines and was feature in newspapers, broadsheets and tabloid.
The annual Binibining Pilipinas Beauty Pageant, envisioned as a prestigious fund-raising activity for projects that would benefit orphans, indigent families and other less fortunate members of Philippine society, is a continuing project of Binibining Pilipinas Charities, Incorporated (BPCI), a non-stock, non-profit organization founded by its chair, Stella Márquez de Araneta.
