MANILA, Philippines – (4th UPDATE) The death toll from the mammoth floods unleashed in the Philippines by tropical storm "Sendong" (international name: Washi) has climbed to more than 650, the Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC) said Sunday.

Data from its official Twitter account shows the death toll as of 6:00 p.m. is already at 652.

This is higher than government figures. As of 12:00 p.m., the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported 332 dead.

PNRC Secretary General Gwendolyn Pang told ANC at least 8,000 families have been affected, with Cagayan de Oro and Iligan City accounting for most of the numbers.

"The affected area is so wide and huge and I believe they have not really gone to all areas to do a search. Also... many of the houses were washed out so that means the houses and the bodies were displaced," Pang said in a separate Agence France Presse (AFP) article.

"We are only counting the actual dead bodies that were sent to funeral parlors," she told AFP, warning many more bodies could still be found.

"This thing happened so fast, it was very overwhelming. It happened in the evening when people were sleeping," said Pang.

"People were saying they were really unprepared. They didn't know it would hit them to this extent," she said.

Fortunately, the waters receded quickly, in contrast to floods in the northern Philippines, which can last for weeks or even months, said Pang.

Tropical Storm Sendong (Washi) on Monday afternoon has already claimed 684 lives, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported.

NDRRMC executive director Benito Ramos said the number of fatalities reached 684 as of 3:30 p.m.

With the figure, the NDRRMC count surpassed the figures of the Philippine Red Cross, which stood at 652 as of Sunday evening.

Ramos said most of the fatalities were from Region 10. He said many of the bodies found were already decomposing. Of the number, 336 from Cagayan de Oro City, Misamis Oriental; 279 from Iligan City, Lanao del Norte; and 17 from Bukidnon Province.

Ramos also said they have lost count of the number of missing people. Earlier, he said they are still reconciling reports on the number of missing people. "We lost count of how many are missing," he said.

Meanwhile, Ramos called for the need for food, clothing and blankets. He said this will be for people now staying in temporary shelters.

Philippines death toll passes 900

The head of the government disaster monitoring council in the Philippines has announced that the death toll from a severe storm that hit the southern Philippines has risen to 927 as bodies have begun to surface in the sea.

However, the toll is expected to rise even further as more floating bodies are recovered today, said Benito Ramos, head of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.

Ramos added that the council had lost count of all those still missing after tropical storm Washi brought heavy rains, flash floods and overflowing rivers to the southern island of Mindanao.

"They (the dead bodies) were washed out to sea. They were underwater for the first three days but now, in their state of decomposition, they are bloated and floating to the surface," Ramos said to reporters.
