BOHOLANA-HSS ELEM CLASS '83 IS 2007 OUTSTANDING YOUNG SCIENTIST AWARDEE-DR. CZARINA SALOMA AKPEDONU
Message: Dr. Czarina Aya-ay Saloma Akpedonu, our classmate, has been named 2007 "Outstanding Young Scientist" in the field of Sociology by the National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST), Philippines. The awarding ceremony will be held on 12 July 2007 at the Manila Hotel.
Her brother Caesar, now Dean of the College of Science, UP Diliman, won the
award in 1992 in the field of Applied Physics.
According to Czarina, during that time, her parents (Ciriaco Balangkig Saloma,
an engineer who was the manager of the Bohol Power Grid of the National Power
Corporation in the 1980s, and Celerina Gatal Aya-ay, public school teacher) hang a poster of the NAST's Ten Outstanding Young Scientists in the wall of their library. One of the names that appeared in the poster was that of Ma. Cynthia Rose Banzon-Bautista who won the award in 1988. Dr. Bautista was her teacher at the UP, and she, Czarina, is the second sociologist in the Philippines to win this award, after her teacher.
