TUGADE TO INAUGURATE DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS IN CALBAYOG, MACTAN-CEBU AIRPORTS
Press Release:
As a testament to the government’s unrelenting pursuit of providing enhanced air mobility and connectivity across the country, Department of Transportation (DOTr) Secretary Arthur Tugade, together with the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) Director General Jim Sydiongco will inaugurate several airport development projects in the Visayas on Wednesday, 05 May 2021.
Sec. Tugade and DG Sydiongco will lead the back-to-back inauguration of the new Passenger Terminal Building (PTB) of the Calbayog Airport in Samar, and the new Taxiway and Administration Building of the Mactan-Cebu International Airport in Lapu-Lapu City.
“Our kababayans in Samar deserve nothing but the best. Hindi biro ang naranasan nilang hirap noong 2013 dahil sa Bagyong Yolanda. Ngayon, ang pagsasaayos natin ng Calbayog Airport ay patunay na ang Samar ay mahalaga. Ang mga Waray ay mahalaga, at mahal kayo ng pamahalaan,” Secretary Tugade said.
Calbayog airport gets a boost
First to be inaugurated is the Calbayog Airport's new PTB, which can now accommodate 450 passengers, increasing the 76-passenger capacity of its old terminal.
With the development in Calbayog Airport, it is expected to help further boost economic activities in the entire Region 8 and enhance the tourism potential of Samar and its nearby provinces.
Moreover, according to the CAAP, during the construction phase of the Calbayog Airport Development Projects, around 1,500 jobs were generated during the construction phase and nearly 300 indirect jobs expected as a result of employment generation at the start of operation of the new PTB.
In addition to the new PTB, the completed development projects in Calbayog Airport also include a new apron, a new taxiway, drainage system, site development, construction of runway end safety area (RESA), and runway asphalt overlay.
Airport projects in Mactan to be inaugurated
After the inauguration of the development projects in Calbayog Airport, Secretary Tugade, Presidential Assistant for the Visayas Secretary Michael Dino, DG Sydionco, Cebu Governor Gwen Garcia, as well as other transport officials will inaugurate the development projects in the Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA).
This includes the MCIA's new taxiway and CAAP Administration Building.
The extended taxiway is expected to increase passenger traffic and aircraft movement in the General Aviation area of the MCIA. This will likewise accommodate wide-body aircraft in preparation for future expansions.
During the construction phase of the new MCIA taxiway, around 60 jobs were generated and more employment opportunities are expected as a result of the expected increase in the number of aircraft using the new taxiway.
Next to be inaugurated is the CAAP new Administration Building which is a 2-story building housing various facilities of the agency. The completed building will enable CAAP personnel to extend efficient service and further provide comfort to its stakeholders.
After the inauguration of the MCIA new taxiway and the CAAP new building, the team will then inspect the ongoing construction of the Mactan-Cebu International Airport Authority (MCIAA) Corporate Building.
During the construction phase of the MCIAA Corporate Building, 187 jobs were generated, and the project is expected to generate more employment opportunities in the area of security, maintenance, and canteen operation, once operational.
The MCIAA Corporate Building will make the offices and departments clustered in one edifice. The MCIA Authority believes that the proximity of the offices can improve the quality and effectiveness of work in line with today’s modern demands.
