LEGAZPI CITY, March 11 (PNA) - The Albay Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) issued Friday an advisory to coastal communities facing the Albay West coast and the eastern seaboard to be on alert for a possible tsunami event following an 8.8 magnitude earthquake that jolted Northen Japan.
Albay Governor Joey Salceda said he advised the town executives in the west coast and eastern seaboard particularly in the islands of Rapu-rapu, Cagraray in Bacacay and San Miguel I in Tabaco City to be on preparedness status and for disaster authorities to be on 24-hour alert for possible evacuation once declared.
Advised to be on high alert are the coastal villages in the towns on eastern seaboard comprising Tiwi, Malinao, Malilipot, Bacacay, Sto. Domingo, and the cities of Tabaco and Legazpi while in the west coast are the towns of Pio Duran, Oas and Libon.
PDRRMC data indicate that there are 149 coastal and island villages with 24,721 families or 128,751 people under threat of tsunami.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) hoisted Tsunami Alert Level 1, advising the public to be on stand-by for possible evacuation.
Phivolcs bulletin said a strong distant earthquake occurred near the East Coast of Honshu, Japan at 1:46 p.m. Friday with depth of 10 km and a magnitude of 7.9.
An earthquake of this size has the potential to generate a destructive tsunami that can strike coastline in the region near the epicenter within minutes and hours, Phivolcs said.
Bicol provinces advised to be on alert are Albay, Catanduanes, Sorsogon, Camarines Sur and Camarines Norte. (PNA) LAP/LQ/MSA/cbd/mmg
